Chapter 8

All eyes immediately darted back to Brenda. The charge nurse swallowed hard, her face visibly paling under the harsh red strobe lights. She looked down at the thick manila folder, her hands trembling as she flipped to the second page of the intercepted documents.

"What does it say, Brenda?" the lead security guard asked, his grip tightening on his taser.

"The... the secondary protocols," Brenda read, her voice shaking so badly she could barely form the words. "If the primary asset—the child—is not delivered by the deadline, the syndicate's local enforcers are authorized to extract the collateral by force. It says... it says a team is already stationed within a three-mile radius of the hospital."

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. She looked at her three innocent, beautiful babies, completely defenseless in their hospital blankets. The victory she thought she had won just seconds ago turned into ashes in her mouth. Richard wasn't just a monster; he had invited a nightmare to their doorstep.

"You see, Maya," Richard said, his tone softening into a patronizing, twisted logic. "I wasn't stealing your child to hurt you. I was sacrificing one to save the other two. It was the only mathematical equation that allowed any of us to survive. Now, by pressing that button, you have doomed us all."

"You are a coward," Maya whispered, her voice laced with an absolute, profound disgust. "You sold your own flesh and blood to save your bank accounts, and you try to dress it up as a sacrifice."

"I am a realist!" Richard countered fiercely. "Now, tell these rent-a-cops to stand down. Let Daniel and Jessica walk out of here with the child. We can still make the exchange. We can still survive."

"No," Daniel said suddenly.

The entire room turned to look at the thirty-year-old man. Daniel was shaking, but for the first time in his life, he stood up straight against his father.

"Daniel, what are you doing?" Jessica hissed, grabbing his arm. "If we don't do what he says, they're going to kill us!"

"I am not handing a newborn baby over to the Russian mob, Jessica!" Daniel yelled, shaking her hand off his arm. He looked at his father, his eyes filled with years of repressed resentment and sudden clarity. "I am done playing your games, Dad. I am done being your pawn."

Daniel turned to the lead security guard. "I will testify. I will tell the police everything about his offshore accounts, his dealings with the Sokolovs, everything. Just arrest him."

Richard’s face twisted into an ugly mask of pure, unadulterated rage. The betrayal of his obedient son broke the last thread of his sanity.

"You traitorous little bastard!" Richard roared.

In a sudden, violent movement, Richard shoved the crying infant into Daniel’s chest, forcing his son to catch the baby. As Daniel grabbed the child, Richard reached into his suit jacket, pulling out a small, silver, heavily customized handgun that he had smuggled past the hospital's metal detectors.
