Chapter 1

The rhythmic, mechanical hiss of the oxygen mask was the only sound tethering Maya Vance to reality. She lay utterly exhausted against the elevated hospital bed, her fair skin rendered almost translucent by the harsh fluorescent lights of the maternity ward. Despite the grueling hours of labor, she remained strikingly pretty, her face possessing the kind of rare, classic beauty reminiscent of a vintage movie star. A thin sheen of perspiration clung to her forehead, and her bare feet peeked out from beneath the thin, starchy hospital sheets. She wore a standard-issue hospital robe, the faded fabric rough against her skin, and a plastic patient wristband that dug slightly into her wrist.

Just a few feet away, resting in a heated, specialized bassinet, were the triplets. Three perfectly healthy newborn babies, wrapped identically in soft, pastel hospital blankets. Maya’s rosy cheeks flushed with a profound, overwhelming warmth every time she looked at them. They were her miracles, the only light in the increasingly dark world of the Vance family.

The heavy wooden door to her private recovery suite clicked open, shattering the quiet sanctuary. Maya turned her head, pulling the oxygen mask down around her neck so she could breathe the room's unsterilized air.

Richard Vance walked in first, moving with the heavy, unyielding stride of a man who believed the world existed solely to serve him. At sixty-seven, the patriarch of the Vance family was an imposing figure. He wore an immaculate, dark charcoal suit, an open-collar shirt that showcased his arrogant refusal to wear a tie, an expensive gold watch, and a heavy wedding ring that glinted under the lights. His polished leather shoes clicked sharply against the linoleum.

"Richard," Maya breathed, her voice raspy and weak. "Where is Thomas? He promised he would be here right after the delivery."

Richard ignored her question completely. He stopped at the foot of her bed, his fair, rosy skin tightening into a mask of absolute, cold authority. Behind him walked Daniel, Maya’s thirty-year-old brother-in-law, dressed casually but expensively in a crisp shirt, tailored trousers, and polished shoes. Beside Daniel stood his wife, Jessica. At twenty-nine, Jessica was practically vibrating with a toxic, smug energy. She wore a designer silk blouse, a pencil skirt, heavy diamond earrings, and high heels that seemed entirely inappropriate for a hospital visit.

"Thomas is attending to the family business, Maya," Richard finally answered, his American accent flat and devoid of any familial warmth. "He trusts me to handle the arrangements here."

"Arrangements?" Maya asked, a sudden spike of maternal panic flooding her veins. She struggled to push herself up on her elbows. "What arrangements? They are my children. There is nothing to arrange."

"Everything in this family is an arrangement," Jessica sneered, stepping out from behind her husband. She crossed her arms, her diamond ring flashing aggressively. "You really thought you could just hoard all the blessings for yourself, didn't you, Maya?"

"I don't know what you are talking about," Maya said, her heart rate monitor beginning to beep faster. "Daniel, what is she talking about?"

Daniel refused to meet her eyes. He stared at the floor, his jaw tight. "Just let Dad do what he came to do, Maya. It's better for everyone this way. It balances the scales."

Richard didn't waste another second on conversation. He turned his back to the bed and walked purposefully toward the bassinet where the three newborns slept peacefully.

"Richard, step away from them," Maya commanded, her voice trembling but rising in volume. "I mean it. Step away from my babies!"
