Chapter 7

Richard looked down at the red laser dot vibrating against his expensive charcoal suit. He looked at the three armed guards forming an impenetrable wall between him and the door. For the first time in his privileged, untouchable life, the reality of consequence began to set in.

"If you shoot me, you risk dropping the child," Richard bluffed, holding the baby slightly higher as a human shield.

"Don't you dare!" Maya shrieked, launching herself out of the bed again.

The security guards held her back gently but firmly. "Stay back, ma'am. We have this under control," one of the guards reassured her.

"Dad, stop it," Daniel pleaded, tears welling up in his eyes. The obedient, spineless son was finally breaking under the weight of his father's madness. "Just put the baby down. It's over. The police are probably already on their way."

"You weak, pathetic boy," Richard spat at Daniel. "You were always a disappointment. Thomas had the fire to run the company, but he was a degenerate. You don't even have the spine to take what is yours."

"I don't want a child this way!" Daniel yelled back, his voice echoing in the red-lit room. "I wanted a family, not a hostage! Put him down!"

Jessica, realizing that the Vance empire was crumbling in real-time, made a desperate bid to save herself. She rushed toward the nurse. "I had no idea! You have to tell the police I had no idea! He told us he was legally adopting the baby because Maya was mentally unfit! I swear to God!"

"Shut up, Jessica," Maya growled from the bed, her almond eyes blazing with hatred. "You stood there and told me to pop out a replacement. You are just as guilty as he is."

"I was lied to!" Jessica sobbed hysterically, her designer heels slipping on the linoleum as she backed away from the guards.

"Enough!" Richard shouted, his voice booming with the last remnants of his patriarchal authority. He looked directly at Maya, his blue eyes cold and calculating. "You think you've won, Maya? You think stopping me today saves your children?"

"They are safe now. And you are going to prison," Maya stated, her voice trembling with adrenaline but resolute.

"If I don't deliver this child to the airstrip in two hours, the Sokolovs will not just take the company," Richard said, a dark, sinister smile slowly spreading across his face. "They will come to this hospital. They will kill me, they will kill Daniel, they will kill you... and they will take all three of the babies."

A chilling silence fell over the room, broken only by the rhythmic, mechanical flashing of the red emergency lights. The sheer magnitude of the threat hung in the air like a guillotine.

"He's lying," Daniel stammered, though his voice lacked any real conviction. "He's just trying to scare you, Maya."

"Am I?" Richard asked, raising a single eyebrow. "Ask the nurse. Ask her what else is in that file."
