Chapter 1

The luxurious mansion breathed with the festive, heavy warmth of Christmas Eve, yet beneath the opulent surface, a dangerous tension suffocated the air. Tiered crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the high, vaulted ceiling, casting a brilliant, warm golden light across the grand banquet hall. The clean, luminous illumination danced elegantly over carved walnut furniture, gilded wall panels, and towering cream marble columns, entirely devoid of any harsh yellow tint. The scent of roasted meats and expensive pine filled the air, mingling with the designer perfumes of the elite guests. Ivory candles glowed fiercely inside ornate brass candelabras, nestled perfectly among thick evergreen garlands and bright red berries. In the corner of the vast room, a towering Christmas tree sparkled with warm fairy lights, heavy gold ornaments, and rich burgundy ribbons that cascaded down its branches.

At the center of this breathtaking display sat Dominic Ashford. Thirty-two years old, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of an American mafia boss. His broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a flawlessly tailored dark three-piece suit. His face was a landscape of harsh, aristocratic angles, featuring a sharp jawline dusted with very short, neat stubble. His dark hair was naturally swept back, framing a face that commanded absolute authority. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch glinted under the lights. Artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers with generous spacing, and a small, distinct artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.

Beside him sat his twenty-nine-year-old fiancée, Estelle Shaw. She was a vision of high-society perfection in an elegant, luxurious burgundy evening gown that clung to her curves, her fair, rosy skin glowing beneath the chandeliers. Dazzling diamond earrings swayed gently from her lobes. Her public manner was polished and reassuring, radiating a warmth that masked a cold, calculating ambition underneath.

Near Dominic sat his mother, Margaret Ashford. At sixty-eight, the older woman wore an elegant evening dress paired with a soft, comforting cardigan. Her fair skin bore the delicate lines of age, and her poor vision caused her to squint slightly at the bright lights. She was a fragile anchor in a violent world, reliant on a distinctive silver pillbox that contained her prescribed heart medication. Sitting quietly next to her was six-year-old Luca, Dominic’s son, dressed impeccably in a small navy suit and a matching burgundy bow tie.

The continuous hum of polite, American-accented conversation filled the room, but the atmosphere shifted the moment Ada Bennett stepped into the light. At twenty-five, the maid possessed a breathtaking, gentle beauty. Her delicate features and highly expressive eyes were framed by fair, rosy skin and a graceful posture. She wore an elegant fitted black maid dress with a cinched waist and a short A-line skirt. The pristine white of her apron, collar, and cuffs contrasted sharply with the dark fabric, matching the white ruffled maid headband that sat perfectly in her hair.

Ada moved with careful, precise gestures. She stepped up to the head of the table, gently placing a gold-rimmed porcelain dessert bowl directly beside Margaret. The older woman offered a weak smile and reached for her distinctive silver pillbox to take her nightly dose before the sweets. With trembling, aged fingers, Margaret flipped the silver lid open.

Instead of small, clinical white pills, the bright light illuminated a cluster of red-and-white striped peppermints.

Luca, recognizing his favorite sweets instantly, leaned forward and looked directly at Margaret.

"Grandma, those are my peppermints," Luca said, his young voice cutting clearly through the ambient noise of the nearby conversations.
