Chapter 4

The silence in the opulent dining hall was a physical weight, pressing down on the chests of the elite guests who dared not draw a breath. The warm golden light from the crystal chandeliers suddenly felt incredibly harsh and exposing. The flickering flames of the ivory candles reflected in fifty pairs of wide, shocked eyes.
Damian Crowne did not flinch. His broad shoulders remained perfectly still beneath his tailored dark three-piece suit. He slowly lowered his gold-rimmed crystal glass to the table, the artistic tattoos on his hands flexing slightly.
He looked first at the six-year-old boy. Owen was trembling, tears rapidly filling his eyes as he stared at the father he had been told was at the bottom of the ocean.
With deliberate, terrifying slowness, Damian shifted his gaze to the older man in the weathered wool coat. He assessed Walter’s exhausted posture, the clear, steady gaze that met his own without a hint of fear, and the undeniable facial similarities between the man and the boy.
Finally, Damian turned his head and met Elise’s eyes.
The housemaid was pale, her fair, rosy skin drained of color. Her expressive eyes held his, filled with a mixture of raw terror and a desperate, pleading honesty. There was a quiet, unspoken mutual affection between the boss and the maid, built on months of stolen glances and silent understandings, but tonight, she had brought a live grenade into his inner sanctum.
"What is the meaning of this?" Silas demanded, half-rising from his chair, his hand drifting toward the inside of his suit jacket. "Who let this vagrant into the hall?"
"Sit down, Silas," Damian ordered. His voice was incredibly deep, slow, and measured, vibrating with a lethal authority that instantly forced the capo back into his velvet chair.
Damian did not look away from Elise. The sheer masculine power radiating from his angular face was suffocating. He allowed a natural, agonizing pause to stretch between them, letting the weight of his unblinking stare demand the absolute truth.
"Elise," Damian said, his voice dropping an octave, echoing across the dead silent room. "Who is your guest?"
"He is a man seeking his family, sir," Elise whispered, her voice fragile but remarkably clear in the acoustic space of the high-ceilinged room.
"Are you in the habit of bypassing my security detail to host family reunions during my private banquets?" Damian asked slowly, his dark eyes searching her delicate features for any sign of deception.
"I am in the habit of preventing tragedies, Mr. Crowne," Elise replied, her breath trembling slightly, though she refused to break eye contact.

"Do you know the penalty for bringing an unvetted stranger within striking distance of the head of this family?" a lieutenant hissed from the adjacent table, glaring at the maid.
"Let her speak," Damian commanded softly, raising a single, tattooed finger to silence the room. He leaned slightly forward, his attention entirely focused on the unfolding drama. "I asked you a question, Elise. Who is standing beside you?"
