Chapter 9

The quiet sanctuary of the subterranean safe room was a heavy contrast to the bloodstained marble floors above. Silas stepped entirely into the room, the heavy vault door clicking softly shut behind him. He looked incredibly weary, the adrenaline of the firefight fading, leaving behind the exhaustion of a man carrying an empire on his broad shoulders.
He walked slowly over to the cot. Laurel gently shifted, careful not to wake the sleeping child in her arms. Silas sat down on the edge of the mattress, his large frame making the small bed groan.
"Did she sleep through the worst of it?" Silas asked, his deep voice barely a whisper, looking down at his daughter’s peaceful face.
"She cried when the explosions started," Laurel whispered back, her dark eyes searching his face for any hidden injuries. "But she was incredibly brave. She kept telling me that you would fix everything."
"Does she truly believe I can fix everything?" Silas asked, a shadow of melancholy crossing his cold eyes. "I brought this violence to her door."
"You protected her from the violence that was already inside the house," Laurel corrected him firmly, her delicate cheekbones flushing slightly. "Bianca would have destroyed her spirit. You chose your daughter over your empire today."
Silas looked up from Phoebe, his gaze locking onto Laurel. The proximity between them was intoxicating. He could smell the faint scent of vanilla and fear radiating from her skin. He reached out, his tattooed hand gently taking her bruised wrist. He didn't ask a question this time; he simply pressed his lips softly against her uninjured palm.
Laurel’s breath hitched violently in her throat. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked at the handsome, lethal mafia boss, realizing how deeply she was falling into his dark, dangerous world.
"Will you stay with us, Laurel?" Silas asked, his voice a low, rumbling vibration that she felt in her very core. "Not as a maid. Not as an employee. But as the woman who holds my family together?"
Laurel’s eyes filled with tears, completely overwhelmed by the intense sincerity in his face. The rigid boundaries of class, wealth, and danger had been completely obliterated by the events of the evening.
"Are you sure you want me?" Laurel asked softly, a single tear escaping and tracking down her cheek. "I don't belong in this world, Silas."
"Do you believe a world without you is one I want to live in?" Silas asked, leaning in until their foreheads rested against each other.
It was a moment of profound, quiet peace in the aftermath of extreme violence. They sat there in the silence of the steel bunker, holding the sleeping child between them, a broken family suddenly forged whole in the fires of a mafia war.

For the first time in years, Silas felt something other than cold calculation. He felt hope. But in his world, hope was a dangerous liability.
Before Laurel could give him her final answer, the heavy, encrypted phone in Silas's pocket began to vibrate aggressively against his leg. The sudden, violent buzzing shattered the quiet intimacy of the room.
