Chapter 5

We opened the pedestal with the brass key.
Grant cursed.
Vanessa went silent.
Inside were four burner phones.
A Vale family pin.
Two backup access cards.
And a small digital recorder.
No paperwork.
No innocent explanation.
I picked up the recorder.
Grant said:
“Don’t.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
He said nothing.
I pressed play.
Vanessa’s voice.
“Isabella still refusing?”
Grant:
“She’ll cooperate.”
Luca:
“And the boy?”
Grant laughed.
“He cries fast.”
I felt Isabella’s hand tighten around Noah.
The recording continued.
Vanessa:
“Massimo loves the kid.”
Luca:
“That’s useful.”
Grant:
“Everything is useful if you know where to squeeze.”
I stopped it.
Noah looked at his father.
He didn’t understand every word.
He understood enough.
“Daddy?”
Grant looked away.
That hurt the child more than yelling.
I crouched.
“Come here.”
Noah came to me.
First time.
He still kept Isabella within reach.
Good.
I asked:
“Why was the key in your flower?”
He pointed at the crushed tissue paper.
“I found shiny.”
“Where?”
“Daddy’s office.”
Grant snapped:
“He took it.”
Noah flinched.
I looked at Grant.
“He is three.”
“He knows not to touch.”
“No.”
“He does.”
Grant stepped toward Noah.
“You knew.”
The child covered his ears.
That stopped everyone.
I stood between them.
Grant rolled his eyes.
“Look at him.”
“What?”
“I raise my voice and suddenly everyone acts like I hit him.”
Isabella whispered:
“You have.”
Silence.
Grant turned.
“What did you say?”
Her face had gone pale.
But she repeated it.
“You have.”
My hands curled.
“When?”
Grant shouted:
“She’s lying.”
Isabella looked at me.
“When Noah threw your watch in the bathtub.”
Grant laughed bitterly.
“He destroyed a twenty-thousand-dollar watch.”
“He was two.”
“He needed to learn.”
“How?”
Silence.
Noah whispered:
“Belt.”
Isabella closed her eyes.
I looked at Grant.
May you like
His confidence finally cracked.
And the mystery of why Noah hid behind his mother was no longer a mystery at all.
