Chapter 14

Vanessa asked to speak with Isabella.
My daughter refused.
Vanessa laughed when I told her.
“Still letting Isabella decide things?”
I stared.
“That sentence tells me you learned nothing.”
She crossed her arms.
“She’s always been weak.”
“No.”
“She stayed with Grant.”
“Because he controlled her.”
“She could have left.”
I stepped closer.
“So could you.”
Her face changed.
“What?”
“You knew.”
Silence.
“You watched Grant hurt Noah.”
“He never hurt him badly.”
There.
That sentence.
As if cruelty becomes acceptable below some invisible line.
“You watched him grab Isabella.”
“They’re married.”
“You helped with routes.”
“That was business.”
“You starved Noah.”
“One meal.”
“You destroyed his gift.”
“It was paper.”
Every harm reduced until she could live beside it.
I looked at her.
“You know what your problem is?”
She smiled.
“I’m sure you’ll tell me.”
“You think size changes truth.”
Her smile faded.
“A small bruise is still a bruise.”
Silence.
“One missed meal is still hunger used as control.”
Nothing.
“One paper flower is still something a child made because he loved his father.”
Vanessa looked away.
Good.
She finally had nowhere to shrink it.
Meanwhile, Matteo asked for one final meeting with me.
I granted it.
He sat without his Bellandi pin.
That mattered.
“You’ll regret removing me.”
“Maybe.”
He frowned.
“You admit that?”
“Yes.”
Power does not require pretending every decision feels good.
“You need me.”
“No.”
“You needed me for twenty-four years.”
“Yes.”
“And now?”
I looked toward the garden where Noah and Isabella were cutting tissue paper at a small table.
“Now I need men who don’t call children leverage.”
Matteo followed my eyes.
He almost smiled.
“That boy will make you soft.”
I looked back.
“He already did.”
His expression changed.
I continued.
“And I’m still here.”
That was the part none of them understood.
Tenderness had not weakened authority.
It had clarified what authority was for.
Matteo stood.
Without his pin.
Without his crews.
Without the future he had imagined.
May you like
He left the room smaller than he entered.
No punch needed.
