Chapter 13

Elliot stopped going near the stone column.

That was the consequence.

Not the council.

Not the capos.

A three-year-old changing his route through his own garden.

He would walk around the flower beds to avoid it.

The first time I noticed, I nearly had the column removed.

Then I stopped.

Destroying every object attached to fear can teach a child the object had power.

So I did something else.

I brought chalk.

Elliot looked confused.

“What?”

“Want to draw on it?”

He stared at the stone column.

“No.”

“Okay.”

We left.

Two days later, he asked for chalk.

His idea.

That mattered.

He drew a crooked blue circle near the base.

Then a yellow line.

Then something he insisted was a lion.

It looked like a potato.

I told him it was excellent.

Within a week, half the column was covered in washable chalk.

The chain was gone.

The stone stayed.

Memory changed slowly.

Julian watched once from the terrace.

Elliot saw him.

Everything stopped.

Julian did not approach.

Good.

Elliot looked at me.

“Uncle Julian?”

“Yes.”

“Why he there?”

“Meeting.”

Elliot thought.

Then shouted:

“Lion!”

Julian looked at the drawing.

“It’s good.”

Elliot smiled.

Not forgiveness.

Not fear.

Just one safe exchange.

Julian’s eyes filled.

He turned away before Elliot saw.

I did.

May you like

I let him.

Some consequences should remain private enough to teach rather than perform.
