Chapter 1

The grand conservatory of the Vale mansion was a masterpiece of glass and wrought iron, a sprawling architectural marvel adjoining the estate’s massive indoor pool. Tonight, it had been transformed into a vision of breathtaking opulence for a crowded evening dinner. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the vaulted glass ceilings, casting a brilliantly warm, golden light that washed over gilded mirrors and towering marble columns. The room was heavy with the sweet, intoxicating scent of white roses, which were meticulously arranged among tall ivory candles glowing in heavy silver candelabras. Polished walnut dining tables were perfectly set with fine porcelain and sparkling crystal stemware, surrounded by plush velvet chairs. Decorative citrus trees framed the edges of the room, adding a vibrant touch of life to the luxurious interior. Soft supplementary lighting clearly revealed the entire room, illuminating the fair, rosy-skinned faces of the city’s most dangerous and influential elite.

At the head of the room stood Orson Vale. He was a mafia boss of terrifying repute, yet he possessed a striking, movie-star handsomeness that commanded absolute attention. His powerful shoulders filled out a tailored charcoal three-piece suit with flawless precision. His angular face featured a high-bridged nose, a sharply defined jaw, and extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy dark hair was swept naturally back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his forehead. His cold, perceptive eyes surveyed his guests with calculating silence. Refined tattoos stretched across his hands and fingers with generous spacing, a dangerous juxtaposition against his polished family signet ring and expensive wristwatch. A small, artistic tattoo peeked just above his collar on his neck, a subtle reminder of his violent origins.

Opposite him stood Eleanora Price, his thirty-three-year-old fiancée. She was draped in a sculpted satin evening gown that hugged her elegant figure perfectly. Heavy diamond earrings sparkled in the warm light, matching the massive engagement ring that rested on her finger. She offered a gracious, practiced smile to a nearby senator, her American accent smooth and melodic as she navigated the treacherous waters of underworld politics.

Then, the polished perfection of the evening fractured.

Maris Lane, a twenty-seven-year-old housemaid, stepped into the golden light of the conservatory. She was beautiful like a movie star, with a softly tapered face, delicate cheekbones, expressive brows, and hair pinned into a loose, elegant chignon. Her sophisticated black maid dress—featuring a cinched waist, fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt with a crisp white apron, collar, and cuffs—was in complete disarray. Her sleeves were entirely damp, clinging to her arms, and the hem of her skirt was soaking wet, leaving a faint trail of water on the polished floor.

Beside her, clutching her hand desperately, was seven-year-old Asher Vale. The boy’s small dinner shirt and trousers were completely soaked, clinging to his shivering frame beneath a thick, fluffy towel that Maris held tightly around him. Asher’s fair skin was pale, his rosy cheeks devoid of color. He looked frightened and utterly subdued, shrinking inward as if expecting a sudden, violent blow.

Maris guided Asher to a velvet chair near the head table. She carefully settled the thick towel around his small, shaking shoulders. The subtle sound of dripping water caught Orson’s attention. He turned his head, his cold eyes immediately locking onto his son's soaked clothing.

Asher looked up at Orson, his small chest heaving, then immediately drew inward, terrified of his father’s impending anger. Maris kept a steady, protective hand beside Asher’s shoulder, refusing to step away.

Orson moved with deliberate, predatory grace. He crouched beside Asher’s velvet chair, his polished leather shoes silent against the floor, and gently held his shivering son close to his chest. He looked directly up into Maris’s expressive, fearful eyes.

“Maris. What happened to Asher?”

Orson’s voice was deep, low, and incredibly deliberate. He spoke with a controlled pause that sliced through the ambient noise of the room. Instantly, every guest stopped eating and speaking, turning their heads toward the mafia boss.

Eleanora’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before she smoothed her expression into a mask of polite concern. She met Orson’s gaze with carefully manufactured empathy, offering a faint, reassuring smile.

“Maris let him fall in,” Eleanora said, her voice smooth, certain, and dripping with fabricated disappointment. “I told her to keep an eye on him near the pool.”

After speaking, Eleanora shot Maris a brief, venomous warning glance—a silent threat promising severe retribution if the maid dared to contradict her.

Maris held Orson’s intense gaze, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. Her inner brows lifted helplessly, the injustice of the lie tearing at her chest. Tears gathered rapidly along her lower eyelids, threatening to spill over. Her fingers tightened desperately against her damp white apron.

“She held him underwater,” Maris said, her voice trembling without rising, maintaining a quiet, profound dignity that shattered the elite silence of the room.
