Chapter 4

The child’s quiet words fell like an executioner’s blade onto the polished walnut table. The innocence of the statement laid bare a monstrosity so deep and calculated that it froze the blood in the veins of every hardened criminal in the room. Valentina had not just tried to poison the boy; she had manipulated his grief, promising him a reunion with his dead mother as he ate the very thing that would kill him.

Julian’s cold eyes snapped to his son. He held Owen’s gaze for a brief, incredibly painful beat. The entire room seemed to hold its breath as the horrifying reality of the child's statement sank into the mafia boss's consciousness.

Then, Julian slowly shifted his eyes toward Valentina.

His head followed his gaze in a slight, deliberate turn. The small artistic tattoo on his neck shifted above his collar. The muscles in his sharply defined jaw firmed almost imperceptibly, setting into unyielding granite. His mouth became completely still, a terrifying void that swallowed all the warmth in the room.

He held Valentina’s eyes with a cold, knowing, unwavering stare. He did not yell. He did not ask a question immediately. He simply stared at her, stripping away every layer of her burgundy satin and diamonds, exposing the rot underneath.

Every guest remained perfectly attentive and utterly motionless, terrified to even draw a breath, waiting for the execution to begin.

"Are you all waiting for a formal invitation to leave my home?" Julian asked, his deep, low voice echoing across the long table. He didn't look at the guests; his cold eyes remained entirely fixed on his fiancée.

The question was a direct command. Instantly, the scraping of velvet dining chairs against the hardwood floor sounded like thunder. Dozens of capos, crime bosses, and politicians scrambled to their feet, abandoning their fine porcelain plates and crystal stemware. They moved with a hurried, terrified silence, practically sprinting toward the heavy silk curtains and the grand double doors of the dining room. No one offered their goodbyes or dared to look back.

Within two minutes, the massive, luxurious room was entirely empty, save for the four of them: Julian, Valentina, Lydia, and young Owen. The heavy mahogany doors clicked shut, echoing with a hollow, terrifying finality.

"Julian, darling, please," Valentina stammered, the faint, concerned smile completely evaporating from her face. Her fair skin turned the color of ash. "The boy is lying! The maid is manipulating him! She probably put the peanuts in there herself! She hates me! She’s been trying to ruin this engagement since the day I moved in! She wants your money, Julian!"

"Do you take me for a fool, Valentina?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper.

Lydia stood her ground, though her knees felt weak. She kept her hands gently resting on Owen's small shoulders, refusing to defend herself against the hysterical accusations. The truth was already standing in the room; it didn't need her protection.

"Do you believe a child invents such a specific, monstrous promise?" Julian inquired, rising slowly from his chair. His broad shoulders completely dominated the space as he stood up, towering over the table.

"I was doing it for you!" Valentina cried, her voice pitching an octave higher as her panic set in. "You demand perfection in this house! He is weak, Julian! He cries all the time! He is holding you back from expanding the empire! You needed a fresh start!"

"Is murdering my blood your definition of a fresh start?" Julian asked, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her side of the table.
