Chapter 1

The opulent dining hall of the Hale estate was bathed in a breathtaking, cinematic luminance that chased away the bitter winter chill outside. Tiered crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceilings, casting a warm, golden light across the cream marble columns and the intricately carved walnut furniture. There was no harshness to the illumination, no muddy yellow tint; only an elegant, enveloping warmth that made the towering Christmas tree in the corner sparkle brilliantly with fairy lights, gold ornaments, and thick burgundy ribbons. Fifty guests, comprising high-ranking syndicate capos, wealthy politicians, and elite socialites, occupied the velvet dining chairs lining the massive banquet table. The air was fragrant with the scent of roasted meats, expensive perfumes, and the fresh evergreen garlands laced with red berries that ran the length of the table. Laughter and the clinking of crystal glasses echoed off the gilded wall panels, a festive mask carefully worn over the lethal reality of the men breaking bread together.

At the entrance of the hall stood Sebastian Hale. At thirty-two, the mafia boss commanded the sprawling room with a quiet, undeniable masculinity. He was strikingly handsome, possessing broad, powerful shoulders that effortlessly filled out his tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face was framed by naturally swept-back dark hair, his jawline shadowed by very short, neat stubble. Refined, artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated the backs of his hands and fingers, standing in stark contrast to the heavy gold signet ring and the luxury wristwatch that caught the chandelier’s light. A small, delicate ink design peeked just above his crisp white collar. He had spent the last hour greeting the arriving guests in the foyer and had not yet taken his seat.

"The northern shipping routes have been entirely secured, Sebastian," murmured Vincent, a senior capo, leaning in close so his crisp American accent wouldn't carry. "Your negotiations in Chicago were apparently very persuasive."

"Are you surprised that our partners suddenly found clarity, Vincent?" Sebastian asked, his deep, measured voice dropping an octave. He spoke slowly, turning his signet ring thoughtfully.

"Not at all, Boss," Vincent chuckled, his fair, rosy skin flushing slightly as he raised his bourbon. "I merely admire the efficiency."

To the side of the head table sat Celeste Vane, his twenty-nine-year-old fiancée. She was draped in a luxurious emerald velvet evening gown that clung perfectly to her figure, her fair skin glowing beneath the golden light. Heavy diamond earrings flashed with every tilt of her head. She maintained a polished, unwavering public smile, playing the role of the devoted, untouchable future wife to perfection.

"Let us leave the talk of shipping routes and borders for the morning, gentlemen," Celeste chimed in, her voice smooth and practiced as she approached them. "Tonight is Christmas Eve. We are here to celebrate our families, our success, and our future."

"A beautiful sentiment, Celeste," agreed a wealthy donor from across the table, raising his gold-rimmed porcelain teacup. "To the future of the Hale family."

Moving silently through the periphery of the dining hall was Lydia Grant. The twenty-five-year-old housemaid navigated the velvet chairs with a graceful, careful posture. She was breathtakingly beautiful, her delicate features and expressive eyes reflecting the warm light. She wore a fitted black maid dress with a cinched waist, a short A-line skirt, a pristine white apron, and a ruffled maid headband. But beneath her elegant uniform, Lydia was in agonizing emotional pain. Her dress was noticeably creased, her apron was rumpled, and her headband sat slightly askew. Worst of all, her beautiful, long hair had been hacked away, cut unevenly to shoulder length, leaving loose, disordered strands falling around her puffy, tear-darkened eyes.
