Chapter 16

Sofia’s final letter arrived on Lily’s fourth birthday.

Mrs. Adler had kept it separate.

She brought it herself.

I asked Lily whether she wanted to open it.

“Yes.”

We sat together.

Elena nearby.

The letter was short.

My Lily,

Today you are four.

You may already have favorite shoes, favorite foods, favorite people, and opinions nobody requested.

That made Lily laugh.

Accurate.

I continued.

People will sometimes confuse giving you things with owning your gratitude.

They do not.

Love is not a bill.

Protection is not a loan.

And if your father ever forgets that, remind him I said so.

I stopped.

Elena smiled through tears.

Lily looked at me.

“Mommy boss you?”

I laughed.

“Apparently.”

She looked pleased.

The final line:

Choose people who make you feel safe enough to need things without apologizing.

That one stayed with me.

Lily did not understand it yet.

I did.

For years, my world rewarded people who needed nothing.

Men who never admitted fear.

Women who never asked twice.

Children who behaved quietly.

Sofia had seen the flaw.

Need is not weakness.

Everyone needs.

The danger begins when powerful people decide needs create debt.

Celeste used shoes.

Letters.

Safety.

Attention.

All to create debt before Lily could even count money.

I folded the letter.

Lily grabbed it immediately.

“Mine.”

“Yes.”

She stuffed it into her little backpack beside crayons.

No archive.

No safe.

Good.

Sofia’s words belonged with Lily.

Not family history.

Not political evidence.

Just her mother talking to her.

Exactly where they should have been all along.
