Chapter 11

The family council met the next evening.

No staged spectacle.

No broken crystal.

Just facts.

Grant admitted creating two previous incidents.

Celeste admitted the third.

She admitted intercepting Sofia’s letters.

Admitted the secret spending rules.

Admitted she wanted Grant controlling Lily’s security.

Several older captains looked uncomfortable.

Good.

One asked:

“Was Lily ever actually injured?”

I stared at him.

He immediately regretted the question.

“No.”

I answered anyway.

“Is that your threshold?”

He looked down.

Another said:

“Celeste believed she was preparing the child.”

“For what?”

“Family life.”

I leaned back.

“Then family life changes.”

Silence.

That was the real decision.

Not simply removing Celeste.

The culture that made her logic sound respectable had to change too.

I looked around.

“No child in this family owes us gratitude for food, clothes, education, protection, or affection.”

One older man frowned.

“That creates entitlement.”

“No.”

My voice stayed calm.

“It creates childhood.”

He said nothing.

“Entitlement is expecting a three-year-old to repay adults for doing their jobs.”

Better.

Then I addressed security.

“No staged tests.”

No one moved.

“No fake failures.”

Still nothing.

“If you believe my protection is weak, say it to my face.”

One captain nodded.

Another did too.

Good.

I looked at Grant.

“You lose security rank entirely.”

His jaw tightened.

He nodded.

“Not because you failed to protect Lily.”

He looked up.

“Because you became the danger.”

That landed.

Celeste lost household authority.

All of it.

No staff channels.

No child-related decisions.

No access to Lily without my approval and Lily’s comfort.

She laughed bitterly.

“You’re letting a child decide family structure.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“I’m letting my daughter decide who gets close to her body.”

Silence.

Different.

Important.

The meeting ended with fewer punishments than some wanted.

More changes than most expected.

That was fine.

I was not trying to make the room fear me.

I was trying to make sure Lily never needed to.
