Chapter 16

Adrian stayed for dinner.

He sat beside me.

That felt strange.

Not wrong.

Just late.

Elena watched carefully from across the table.

I understood.

Trust would not arrive because blood did.

I did not ask Adrian to call me brother.

Did not show him the organization.

Did not talk about inheritance.

I asked what he liked.

“Dinosaurs.”

I almost smiled.

“Of course.”

“Also trains.”

“Better.”

He looked confused.

Khloe laughed.

It was the first easy sound in the house all day.

Later, Adrian asked about our father.

“Was he nice?”

I thought about it.

“Sometimes.”

Elena watched me.

I continued.

“But being nice sometimes doesn’t erase what someone does when they’re afraid.”

Adrian nodded.

Children accepted complexity more easily than adults who built identities around denial.

That night, Khloe sat beside me in our bedroom.

The baby moved.

She took my hand and placed it over her belly.

“You should have believed me earlier.”

The words came quietly.

“Yes.”

No defense.

No excuse.

“I’m sorry.”

She studied me.

“Isabella counted on you dismissing me.”

“I know.”

“That can’t happen again.”

“It won’t.”

Her expression sharpened.

“Don’t promise because you’re angry.”

I nodded.

Fair.

“What do you want me to promise?”

She thought for a moment.

“Listen before deciding I’m afraid for no reason.”

I looked at her.

“I can do that.”

That mattered more.

Not certainty.

A behavior.

A choice.

Khloe leaned against me.

For months, Isabella tried to use falls to convince me my wife was fragile.

Instead, every reveal forced me to see how long Khloe had been carrying danger alone.
