Chapter 4

The sheer, suffocating gravity of Adrian’s tone sent a shockwave outward from the head table. He slowly rose to his full height, his deeply masculine, athletic frame towering over the women. He moved with a deliberate, lethal grace, stepping smoothly around the table and placing himself squarely between Agnes’s chair and his fiancée.
The physical barrier he created was absolute. His broad shoulders completely shielded the weeping elderly woman and the protective maid from Estelle’s view.
"Adrian, you are making a scene," Estelle hissed, her rosy skin paling slightly as she recognized the dangerous glint in his cold eyes. "The guests are watching."
She was right. The loud, jovial conversations at the adjacent elegant dinner tables were dying out one by one. The clinking of crystal champagne flutes and silver cutlery ceased entirely. The elite white American adults, sensing the sudden, apocalyptic shift in the room's energy, stopped talking and eating. Every single guest turned their attention toward the head table, holding their breath in the bright, luminous light.
Adrian completely ignored his fiancée. He turned his back to Estelle, his attention focusing entirely on the young woman standing beside the elderly baker.
He looked directly at Ivy. The clean, clear lighting highlighted the subtle, seductive elegance of her uniform and the profound, fierce strength in her expressive eyes. She did not shrink back from the Mafia boss. She met his penetrating gaze with absolute resolve, her hand still resting comfortingly on Agnes’s shoulder.
"Ivy," Adrian said. His deep voice stayed incredibly low, yet in the absolute silence of the vast ballroom, it carried with terrifying clarity. He used measured, controlled pauses, letting the weight of his authority command the truth. "What happened?"
Ivy swallowed hard, her full, natural lips pressing together for a brief moment. She could feel the collective stare of the city's most powerful people bearing down on her.
"She came to the service entrance ten minutes ago, Mr. Kingsley," Ivy answered, her voice steady but laced with a dark, underlying sorrow. "The guards tried to turn her away, but I recognized her from your stories. I knew you would want to see her."
"You did the right thing," Adrian murmured, his tattooed fingers resting lightly on the back of Agnes’s velvet chair. "But look at her hands, Ivy. Look at the soot on her clothes. Tell me what happened before she reached my doors."
Estelle, frantic to regain control of the narrative and save face in front of her high-society peers, tried to step around Adrian’s massive frame.
"Adrian, this is ridiculous!" Estelle interjected loudly. "She obviously had a kitchen accident! Send her away with a check and let us get back to the banquet!"

Adrian did not even turn his head. He simply raised one hand, his fingers spread, the generous spacing of his refined artistic tattoos fully visible in the warm light. The gesture was a silent, absolute command for silence. Estelle froze, her mouth snapping shut in sudden, genuine fear.
"I am waiting, Ivy," Adrian said softly.
