Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the newly inaugurated hotel was a masterpiece of luminous architecture, bathed in bright, airy video colors that radiated a soft, elegant warmth. Clean, clear lighting with a slightly warm white balance washed over the room, ensuring there was no heavy yellow cast or muddy orange tint. The scene felt flawlessly fresh and polished, defined by a gentle golden warmth and immaculate, clean whites. Beneath the cascading crystal chandeliers, the elite of the city mingled around elegantly draped dinner tables, their fair and rosy skin glowing with health and immense wealth. Every guest in attendance was a white American, their sharp, confident American accents blending into a sophisticated hum of cocktail chatter.
Standing near the head table, surveying the room with the casual dominance of an apex predator, was Adrian Kingsley. At thirty-seven, he was the undisputed Mafia boss of the region, possessing a deeply masculine, athletic build with broad shoulders that commanded absolute respect. He was as handsome as a classic movie star. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was swept back elegantly, though a single, loose strand fell effortlessly over his forehead. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble.
"The mayor seems entirely too comfortable tonight, Adrian," said Estelle Monroe, clinging to his arm.
Adrian did not immediately look at his fiancée. His cold, penetrating eyes continued to scan the crowded perimeter. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit that fit him with lethal perfection, a heavy family signet ring, and polished leather shoes. When he raised his hand to adjust his cuff, the refined, artistic tattoos on his hands and fingers were visible. The designs featured generous spacing, preventing them from looking dense, perfectly matching the small, elegant tattoo visible on the side of his neck.
"Let him drink, Estelle," Adrian replied. His voice was incredibly deep, staying low in his chest with deliberate, controlled pauses. "A comfortable man. Makes mistakes. And mistakes are profitable."
Estelle, thirty-two years old, laughed softly, the sound tinkling like thin glass. She wore a stunning, emerald satin evening gown that clung to her figure, heavy diamond earrings, and a massive engagement ring that caught the luminous warmth of the room. Her rosy skin flushed with the thrill of being attached to the most dangerous man in the city.
"You always see the angles," Estelle murmured, leaning closer to his shoulder. "But tonight is supposed to be a celebration. You own this hotel now. We should be toasting our success, not analyzing the politicians."
May you like
"In my world," Adrian said slowly, turning his sharp gaze toward her, "celebration is simply a pause between wars. You would do well to remember that."
Before Estelle could formulate a response, the heavy double doors near the reception area swung open. The ambient noise of the ballroom did not falter, but Adrian’s razor-sharp instincts immediately honed in on the movement. Stepping into the bright, golden warmth of the hall was a young woman supporting an elderly figure, making their way slowly toward the head table. Adrian’s jaw tightened imperceptibly as the two women approached.
