Chapter 3

The tension in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating pressure. The tall candles flickering inside their silver candelabras seemed to be the only things moving in the entire, luxurious space. Daphne gripped the edge of the polished walnut table, her diamond engagement ring catching the light as her knuckles turned white.

She met Vincent’s cold, unyielding eyes and desperately restored her concerned, affectionate smile, attempting to reclaim her territory.

"He's confused. He already took it," Daphne lied, her delivery measured and calm.

She offered the fabrication with the effortless ease of a woman accustomed to controlling the reality of those around her. Her eyes frantically searched Vincent’s angular face for any sign of agreement, begging him to prioritize her word over the fragile accusation of a housemaid. She waited for him to nod, to accept the lie and order the girl to leave the room.

Vincent did not speak. He did not nod. He gave her a slow, searching look, dissecting the layers of her deception beneath the bright, elegant warmth of the chandeliers.

Beside him, Howard sat rigidly in his elegant dinner jacket. The seventy-three-year-old man had spent his life commanding fear and respect, building the very empire his son now ruled. To be reduced to a trembling liability, manipulated by a socialite, was a fate worse than death.

Howard looked directly at Daphne, bypassing the terrifying silence of his son. The older man’s eyes glistened with unshed tears, and his shoulders drew inward slightly, crushed by the weight of his own vulnerability.

"You said I’d earn it," Howard stated.

His voice was quiet, lacking the booming authority it once held, trembling instead with wounded disbelief. He spoke without anger, simply delivering the devastating, unvarnished truth of a father who had been tortured in his own home.

The silence that followed was absolute. It was the silence of a bomb dropping, suspended in the air a microsecond before detonation.

Vincent’s eyes remained on his father for a brief, agonizing moment. He processed the words, the realization of what had actually occurred striking him with the force of a physical blow. Daphne had not just confiscated the medication; she had used it to extort obedience from an ailing, proud man.

Slowly, terrifyingly, Vincent’s eyes shifted. His head followed slightly, tracking across the white damask tablecloth until his gaze landed squarely on Daphne.

His sharply defined jaw tightened until the bone threatened to snap. The extremely short stubble seemed to bristle with the suppressed violence boiling beneath his calm exterior. He fixed Daphne with a cold, unwavering stare, his perceptive eyes stripping away her diamonds, her satin gown, and her lies, exposing the cruel, power-hungry monster trembling beneath.

He held her gaze in complete, absolute silence. He said nothing. The silence from the mafia boss was infinitely more terrifying than a scream.

Daphne’s reassuring smile faded entirely, melting away to reveal genuine, primal panic. She opened her mouth to speak, to spin another lie, to deflect the blame onto the housemaid, but no words came out. Every guest in the room remained completely silent, facing Vincent, watching the executioner render his silent verdict.
