Chapter 8

"Are we secure to move to the bunker?" Malcolm asked his comms earpiece, breaking the silence in the corridor.
"Yes, Boss!" Marcus shouted over the radio, gunfire echoing in the background. "The mercenaries are retreating toward the east gate! We have them pinned! The police are three minutes out. They overplayed their hand."
"Will you ensure none of them escape the perimeter alive?" Malcolm asked coldly.
"We are mopping them up now, sir."
Malcolm released the button. He turned to Freya, his cold, perceptive eyes softening completely. The immediate threat was neutralized, but the night was far from over.
"Shall we retreat to the bunker until the perimeter is cleared?" Malcolm asked, his deep voice a steady, unbreakable anchor in the violent storm that had finally begun.
He led her quickly through a concealed panel in the wall, descending a narrow, concrete staircase into the subterranean bunker beneath the estate. The heavy steel doors sealed shut behind them with a resounding, metallic clack, completely cutting off the noise of the dying skirmish above.
The bunker was brightly lit, stocked with emergency supplies, tactical monitors, and comfortable cots. Malcolm set his customized automatic weapon down on a metal table. He turned to face Freya, his movie-star handsome face illuminated by the harsh, clinical light of the safe room.
"Are you prepared for the reality of this life, Freya?" Malcolm asked quietly, stepping into her personal space. "The world outside these walls is dangerous. My enemies are dead today, but there will always be others."
Freya stood tall in her dusty black maid dress, the white lace headband still firmly pinned in her hair. She looked up into Malcolm’s cold, perceptive eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her spirit completely unbroken.
"Are you asking if I am afraid to stand beside you?" Freya asked, answering his question with one of her own, a spark of defiant courage in her expressive eyes.
"I am asking if you understand that once you step fully into my life, there is no stepping back," Malcolm stated, his deep voice a low, mesmerizing whisper.
Freya held his gaze. She had seen the monster he could be to his enemies, but she had also seen the man who would walk through fire to protect his mother's garden, and the woman who had fought for him.
"Do you believe I would ever want to step back, Malcolm?" Freya asked softly.
"Shall we face whatever comes next together?" Malcolm asked.
He leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a profound, searing kiss—a promise sealed in the bright, luminous safety of the bunker. The garden party had ended in a broken alliance, but the true war for the city had only just begun. Hester thought she was attacking a man who had lost his edge; she was about to discover she had awakened a monster protecting his true partner.
The morning sun eventually broke over the estate with a quiet, luminous brilliance, pushing through the smoke and destruction of the night before. The heavy steel doors unsealed with a metallic hiss, and Malcolm led Freya back up into the grand foyer.

The chaos of the previous night was already being meticulously scrubbed away by his loyal staff. The shattered crystal and broken porcelain were being cleared, the damaged walnut paneling covered, and the ivory walls wiped clean. The mansion was returning to its state of elegant warmth, though an undeniable tension still lingered in the air.
Malcolm stood in the center of the foyer, his tailored dark suit brushed clean of dust. He was a king standing in his restored castle.
