Chapter 2

Domenico’s polished leather shoes made almost no sound as he crossed the vast expanse of the reception hall. The bodyguards and capos parted instantly, sensing the catastrophic drop in the room's atmospheric pressure. He reached the scene before Genevieve could even register his presence.

He didn't speak to his aunt. Domenico immediately dropped to one knee, wrapping his powerful, masculine hands around his weeping daughter. He lifted Lily safely into his arms, pressing her tiny, trembling body securely against his tailored dark vest.

"I've got you, Lily. Daddy is here," Domenico murmured, his deep, slightly raspy voice dropping into a register of profound, unexpected gentleness.

"Daddy…" Lily sobbed, burying her tear-stained, rosy face into his neck, her small hands clutching the lapels of his suit.

As Domenico comforted his daughter, Genevieve realized the stuffed dinosaur was still resting on the marble floor a few feet away. Panic, raw and unfiltered, flashed across her aging features. Ignoring her nephew, the matriarch rushed forward, her heavy pearl jewelry rattling as she bent down to snatch the toy.

Lily saw the movement over Domenico’s shoulder. She extended a small, shaking finger, pointing desperately at the stuffed animal.

"Daddy…" Lily cried, her voice cracking with fear. "Don’t let her have it."

Domenico’s sharply defined jawline locked. He reached out with his free hand, moving with a fluid, terrifying grace, and effortlessly beat Genevieve to the toy. He picked up the stuffed dinosaur, his large hand completely dwarfing the soft fabric.

Genevieve froze, her hand hovering in the empty air, her fair skin draining of all color.

"Domenico, give that to me," Genevieve demanded, her American accent pitching high with artificial authority. "It is dirty. I was simply going to have a maid wash it."

Domenico ignored her. He held the dinosaur up in the bright, cinematic sunlight pouring through the windows. As he turned the toy over in his hand, his sharp, intimidating eyes caught something abnormal. A torn seam ran along the belly of the stuffed animal.

He pulled the fabric back slightly.

Nestled deep inside the cotton stuffing was a highly sophisticated, tiny blinking camera.

The air in the room turned to solid ice. In the world of the Ravelli syndicate, surveillance devices were not toys; they were tools of war, espionage, and treason.

From the periphery of the reception, Adrian Ravelli stepped forward. At forty-one, Genevieve’s son and a senior Mafia capo wore an expensive tailored suit and a luxury wristwatch. He saw the blinking red light exposed in Domenico’s hand, and his face instantly contorted with absolute panic.

"Give me that," Adrian roared, entirely abandoning protocol. He lunged forward aggressively, his polished shoes scraping against the marble as he closed the distance between himself and the head of the family.

Domenico did not step back. He kept Lily safely tucked against his chest and slowly raised his cold, dead eyes to meet his cousin's charge.
