Chapter 1

The reception hall of the Ravelli estate was a masterpiece of architectural brilliance, bathed in bright, cinematic light. Crisp, pure sunlight poured through the towering arched windows, completely devoid of any yellow tint, illuminating the pristine marble floors and the vibrant, rich colors of the lavish gathering. Dozens of guests, all white American adults bearing fair and rosy complexions, mingled elegantly near the grand stone fireplace. At the edge of the room stood a long drinks console and a polished rolling service trolley, laden with stacked, gleaming glassware and pristine linen boxes.

Three-year-old Lily Ravelli stood near the edge of the adult conversation, entirely out of place in her elegant, pastel family-reception dress and tiny flats. She clutched a worn, soft stuffed dinosaur to her chest, her bright blue eyes looking up at the towering figures around her.

"Aunt Genevieve?" Lily asked, her small, innocent voice breaking through the sophisticated American accents of the surrounding capos. "Why is Uncle Adrian putting a battery in my dino?"

Genevieve Ravelli stopped mid-sentence. At sixty-three, she was a senior matriarch of the family, draped in an elegant, deep-plum formal gown. Heavy pearl jewelry adorned her neck, and multiple diamond rings flashed on her fingers. She looked down at the three-year-old girl, her fair, powdered face twisting into a mask of sudden, unwarranted malice.

"I told you to go play in the garden," Genevieve hissed, stepping quickly away from the adults.

"But I wanted to know—"

Before Lily could finish her sentence, Genevieve’s hand shot out.

With blinding, vicious speed, Genevieve’s open palm struck the three-year-old girl violently across the face. The sharp, sickening sound cracked over the ambient music. Lily spun from the brutal impact, losing her balance completely. She crashed hard onto the cold marble floor, a sharp cry tearing from her lungs. Her beloved stuffed dinosaur slipped from her tiny hands, sliding several feet away across the polished stone.

Genevieve stepped forward, her expensive high heels clicking ominously, towering over the weeping child.

"Ask another question and you lose more than the toy," Genevieve commanded coldly, her eyes darting nervously toward the stuffed animal resting on the floor.

Lily curled inward on the marble, her rosy cheeks flushed with a deep red handprint. She didn't understand why she had been struck. She only knew that the woman who was supposed to be her family had just hurt her terribly.

The heavy mahogany doors leading to the private Mafia council room clicked open.

Domenico Ravelli stepped over the threshold. At thirty-five, he possessed a deeply masculine, terrifying power that commanded absolute obedience. He was handsome like a classic movie star, his angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jawline accentuated by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was naturally slicked back, a few loose strands falling effortlessly over his forehead. Dressed in a tailored dark three-piece suit, a crisp dress shirt, a heavy family signet ring, and polished leather shoes, he radiated an elegant yet lethal authority.

His cold, sharp, intimidating eyes instantly assessed the scene. He saw Genevieve standing aggressively over his daughter. And he saw Lily weeping on the floor.

Domenico moved. The casual elegance of the Mafia boss vanished in a microsecond, replaced by the terrifying, explosive speed of a father protecting his blood.
