Chapter 5

The descent into the darkness was agonizingly slow. The staircase wound deep beneath the foundation of the massive estate, far past the wine cellars and the normal basement levels. The only light came from dim, flickering emergency bulbs caged in rusted wire. Genevieve stumbled down the concrete steps ahead of him, weeping quietly, terrified of the man walking silently behind her.
"How long?" Marcus asked, his voice echoing off the damp concrete walls.
"Six months," Genevieve whispered, her voice cracking. "Since she disappeared. We kept her down here. We told everyone she took the offshore accounts and ran away to Europe."
"You lived in my house, slept in my bed, and smiled at my daughter while my wife was locked beneath our feet," Marcus said, the controlled pauses in his speech highlighting a rage so profound it bordered on absolute madness. "You are entirely hollow."
They reached the bottom of the stairs. A heavy steel security door blocked the corridor. Genevieve punched a six-digit code into the keypad with trembling fingers. The heavy magnetic locks disengaged with a loud clack, and she pushed the door open.
Marcus stepped past her into the hidden bunker. It was a large, windowless concrete room. In the center, illuminated by a single harsh fluorescent light, was a reinforced glass cell.
Curled on a small cot inside the cell was Maya.
Marcus felt the breath leave his lungs. He walked slowly toward the glass. Maya’s beautiful, deep mahogany skin was pale and ashen from months without sunlight. She wore a simple, faded grey tracksuit. She looked incredibly thin, her cheekbones sharp and pronounced, but as she heard the heavy footsteps, she slowly lifted her head.
Her eyes, tired but fiercely intelligent, locked onto Marcus. She didn't look surprised. She looked like a woman who had been waiting for a ghost.
"Marcus," Maya breathed, her voice raspy and weak. She pushed herself up from the cot, walking unsteadily toward the glass.
"Maya," Marcus said, placing his large, tattooed hand flat against the thick glass barrier. The cold, intimidating Mafia Boss completely vanished, replaced by a husband staring at his resurrected world. "I am getting you out."
He turned to Genevieve, his eyes completely dead. "Open it."
Genevieve scrambled to the control panel on the wall, swiping a keycard and pressing a button. The heavy glass door slid open with a pneumatic hiss.
Marcus stepped into the cell. He wrapped his arms around Maya, pulling her frail body against his chest, burying his face in her hair. She clung to his ivory linen suit, sobbing quietly, her tears soaking into his silk shirt.
"Chloe," Maya gasped, pulling back slightly to look at him. "Is she safe? Genevieve threatened to hurt her if I ever screamed."
"Chloe is safe," Marcus assured her, gently touching her face. "She was the one who led me to you. She remembered the wall."

Maya let out a breathless, relieved laugh, touching the faded blue waterproof bracelet on her own wrist—the exact match to the one Chloe wore. "My brave little girl."
"Marcus," Maya said, her expression suddenly hardening as she looked over his shoulder at the terrified Genevieve. "You cannot just walk out of here. Julian and Genevieve didn't do this alone. They sold out the family."
