Chapter 2

Marcus did not stop at the edge of the pool. He stepped directly into the water, the pristine leather of his suede loafers completely submerged. The water soaked the bottoms of his custom-tailored ivory trousers, but he moved with a terrifying, singular focus that made the entire terrace fall into a deathly, suffocating silence.
He reached the shallow steps and immediately pulled Chloe safely into his arms. He lifted her out of the water, pressing her small, shivering body against the dry silk of his shirt, and turned, carrying her back onto the sun-baked terrace.
Chloe coughed violently, wrapping her small arms tightly around his neck. She buried her face in his shoulder, her golden-brown skin cold and damp. Marcus held her with fierce, protective tenderness, his large hand—adorned with a heavy gold signet ring and sharp, artistic finger tattoos—gently stroking her back.
"I have you," Marcus whispered, his voice vibrating with a slow, controlled cadence. "You are safe."
Chloe pulled back slightly, sniffing. She looked down at her own wrist. Fastened there was a faded blue waterproof bracelet, a cheap trinket that once matched one worn by her missing mother, Maya. Chloe stared at it for a long moment, her small chest heaving.
"Daddy…" Chloe cried, her voice echoing clearly across the frozen terrace. "Mommy never left this house."
Marcus froze. The absolute stillness of his body was more terrifying than any sudden movement. His cold, sharp eyes slowly drifted from the faded blue bracelet up to Genevieve, who was still standing in the shallow water.
Genevieve went completely pale, her rosy complexion vanishing into a ghostly, terrified white.
Before Marcus could speak, Julian suddenly charged forward from the edge of the patio. His boat shoes slapped against the wet stone. Panic overriding his common sense, Julian grabbed the lapels of Marcus’s expensive ivory linen jacket.
"She’s confused!" Julian shouted, furious and desperate to control the narrative. He violently shoved Marcus away from Chloe, trying to force a physical separation between the boss and the child. "Give Genevieve the bracelet, Marcus! The kid is hallucinating from the heat!"
Julian didn't wait for a response. Driven by sheer, reckless adrenaline, he drove his first punch directly into Marcus’s shoulder.

The impact barely moved the Mafia Boss. Marcus handed Chloe gently to Mrs. Higgins, who had rushed forward. He took one incredibly controlled step backward, adjusting the lapel of his ruined jacket. He slowly looked up at Julian, the silence stretching out like a wire about to snap.
"You put your hands on me," Marcus stated, the words dropping like stones into deep water. "You put your hands on my daughter. And now, you are going to bleed on my terrace."
