Chapter 3

Julian’s chest heaved, his face flushed with a mixture of terror and misplaced pride. He knew he had crossed an unforgivable line, but with fifty guests watching, he felt he had no choice but to double down.
"You're losing your mind, Marcus!" Julian yelled, raising his fists again. "Genevieve is your wife! Maya ran away with our money months ago! You're going to take the word of a toddler over your own family?"
"Maya was my family," Marcus replied, his volume remaining lethally low. "You are just a parasite I allowed to sit at my table."
Julian swung again, throwing a heavy, desperate right hook aimed squarely at Marcus’s sharply defined jaw.
Marcus moved with terrifying, fluid precision. He slipped outside the strike, the linen of his suit shifting gracefully as Julian’s fist met only empty air. In the exact same breath, Marcus planted his suede loafer and drove one explosive, devastating counterpunch directly across Julian’s face.
The sickening crunch of shattering bone echoed over the pool. Julian’s eyes rolled back. He spun violently backward, his momentum carrying him completely off the stone patio and directly into the freestanding croquet-equipment rack.
The heavy wooden frame folded sideways under Julian’s dead weight. Wooden mallets scattered violently across the manicured grass. Padded equipment bags burst from their shelves, lightweight iron hoops tumbled outward, and Julian crashed brutally through the collapsing lower support, landing in a ruined, unconscious heap.
No one in the crowd dared to breathe.
Genevieve scrambled out of the pool, her silk tunic dripping wet, her wedge sandals slipping on the tiles. Blinded by panic and fury, she lunged toward Mrs. Higgins, desperately trying to grab Chloe’s faded blue bracelet.
"Give it to me!" Genevieve shrieked.
Marcus stepped between them, tearing Genevieve's hand away from the nanny with a crushing grip.
Genevieve, completely unhinged, swung her free hand at his face, her diamond rings aiming for his eyes.
Marcus blocked her arm effortlessly with his forearm. Without a fraction of hesitation, he delivered one thunderous, open-handed slap across her face. The impact sounded like a gunshot. Genevieve spun wildly. Marcus immediately pivoted, driving a powerful, calculated front kick directly into her torso.
Genevieve rocketed backward across the terrace, slamming into the tall folding cabana-screen rack. The sheer force of the impact caused the fabric panels to collapse around her entirely. Lightweight wicker towel baskets overturned, sending pristine, folded white towels exploding across the terrace. Genevieve crashed beneath the tangled, lightweight frame, groaning in absolute agony as the air was forced from her lungs.
Marcus stood amidst the absolute destruction of his pool terrace, completely unbothered, his breathing entirely steady.
"Daddy," Chloe’s small voice broke the silence.
Marcus turned. Chloe had wiggled out of Mrs. Higgins's arms and walked toward an old, decorative stone wall that bordered the far side of the pool. She reached out her small hand, touching a nearly invisible, vertical seam hidden within the mortar.
She pointed her tiny finger directly at the crack.
Mrs. Higgins stared in absolute shock, her hands flying to her mouth.
Marcus walked slowly toward the wall. He reached out, his tattooed hand tracing the concealed panel. The mortar was fake. It was a pressure seam.

Marcus turned his head, his cold eyes locking onto the terrified, gasping Genevieve buried under the cabana wreckage.
"So my wife never abandoned me," Marcus said, his voice a dead, terrifying calm. "Take me to her. Right now."
