Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Briarwood estate cast a bright, cinematic glow over the crowded charity recital gallery. There was no heavy yellow tint, only a natural, airy warmth that illuminated the sixty elite guests seated on padded velvet benches. Champagne flutes clinked softly over the low murmur of affluent American accents. The space was an architectural marvel, featuring a low performance riser surrounded by foam scenery cubes and a rolling stage dolly, preparing for the evening's entertainment. Adjoining the gallery, separated by heavy mahogany doors, was Cormac Briarwood's private study—a sanctuary rarely breached.

At thirty-two, Cormac was a powerful Mafia boss, though tonight he played the role of a generous philanthropist. He was devastatingly handsome and aggressively masculine, with dark, swept-back hair and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by short, neat stubble. Refined artistic tattoos marked his neck and hands, partially obscured by the crisp cuffs of his tailored dark three-piece suit. A heavy family signet ring rested on his finger, catching the luminous light alongside an expensive wristwatch and polished leather shoes.

"The turnout is unprecedented, Cormac," an older senator murmured, leaning in close. "Your family's generosity never ceases to amaze."

Cormac’s deep, controlled voice was a low rumble. "We find that generosity ensures loyalty, Senator. Do you disagree?"

Before the politician could answer, a heavy, expensive cologne announced the arrival of Gareth Briarwood. At forty-three, Cormac’s older cousin possessed the polished veneer of high society, draped in an expensive formal suit and a luxury wristwatch, but he lacked the lethal composure that made Cormac a king. Gareth was flanked by two massive bodyguards in dark suits and earpieces—one Black American, one white American—their sheer size parting the crowd of guests like a dark tide.

Gareth stepped onto the low performance riser, his polished shoes echoing loudly, interrupting the string quartet tuning their instruments in the corner. He looked down at Cormac, a slick, dangerous smile stretching across his face.

"Always playing the gracious host, aren't you, little cousin?" Gareth sneered, his voice projecting across the silent gallery.

Cormac did not rise. He simply turned his cold, observant eyes toward Gareth. "Is there a reason you are interrupting the musicians, Gareth?"

"I think it's time we changed the tune," Gareth said, stepping off the riser.

Before anyone could react, Gareth moved with unexpected violence. He lunged forward and shoved Cormac violently backward. The force of the unexpected strike against Cormac's broad shoulders sent the Mafia boss stumbling over the edge of the low riser.

Cormac landed hard on the plush carpet, the breath rushing from his lungs with a heavy thud.

Several nearby guests recoiled, dropping champagne flutes that shattered against the floor. The polite chatter of the charity recital evaporated instantly, replaced by a suffocating, terrified silence.

Gareth stood over his fallen cousin, his two bodyguards remaining rigidly beside him. He looked down, a mocking, triumphant grin on his face.

"Call your maid," Gareth sneered, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive suit. "You'll need her."
