Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the Faircroft estate was a vision of absolute luminance. Bright, cinematic light cascaded from towering crystal chandeliers, casting a soft, elegant warmth across the expansive room. There was no heavy yellow cast to the illumination, nor any muddy orange tint; instead, the light caught the clean whites of the marble pillars and the natural, rosy skin tones of the fifty elite guests milling about. This was a charity ball, a pristine gathering of capos, donors, and high-society socialites, all designed to mask the brutal reality of the Faircroft mafia syndicate. At the center of it all stood Aldous Faircroft.

At thirty-two, Aldous was a man who commanded the room through sheer, undeniable presence. He was strikingly handsome and unapologetically masculine, his dark hair slicked back to reveal an angular face and a jawline dusted with extremely short, neat stubble. He wore a tailored dark tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders flawlessly, a black bow tie, and a family signet ring that caught the bright light. What truly set him apart were the artistic tattoos trailing up his neck and covering his hands, a stark contrast to the refined elegance of his attire.

"The silent auction has already exceeded expectations, Aldous," muttered Vincent, one of his older capos, swirling a glass of bourbon. "Your new philanthropic image is working wonders for the family."

"Charity is merely a tax we pay for public tolerance, Vincent," Aldous replied, his voice deep and measured. "Do you truly believe these people care about the cause?"

"They care about access to you," Vincent chuckled. "They care about the power you hold."

"Power is an illusion until it is tested," Aldous said, his sharp eyes scanning the crowded room.

From the periphery of his vision, he noticed Carys Elmsley. The twenty-five-year-old housemaid was breathtakingly beautiful, possessing a slender build and expressive features that could easily rival the movie stars in attendance. She wore a fitted black maid dress, a pristine white apron, a white lace maid headband, and sensible flats. She was currently collecting empty champagne flutes near the edge of the dance floor.

"Would you care for a fresh drink, Mr. Faircroft?" Carys asked softly, stepping forward with her silver tray.

Aldous turned his gaze to her, the hard lines of his face softening almost imperceptibly. "I am perfectly fine, Carys. Thank you. Have you been offered a break tonight?"

"The staff is fully engaged, sir," she replied, a faint, shy smile touching her lips. "I don't mind the work. It is a beautiful evening."

"Do not let them overwork you," Aldous murmured, his tattooed hand briefly hovering near the edge of her silver tray. "If you need to step away, you have my permission."

"Thank you, sir," she whispered, her cheeks flushing a natural rosy pink under the bright lights before she bowed her head and slipped back into the crowd.

May you like

Vincent raised an eyebrow. "You are remarkably gentle with the help, Aldous. Some in the family view it as a weakness."

"Let them view it however they please," Aldous said coldly. "My father was a cleaner. I have more respect for the woman holding that tray than for the men wearing silk ties in this room."
