Chapter 7

The journey through the opulent corridors of the mansion was a blur of frantic, highly coordinated activity. Tactical enforcers, dressed in dark combat gear, were rapidly taking up positions by every window and entrance, transforming the luxurious estate into an impenetrable fortress. The warm, festive lights of the Christmas Eve decorations felt entirely out of place against the cold, metallic reality of weapons being loaded and radios crackling with secure comms.

Dante did not relinquish his hold on his daughter. He guided Arthur and Evelyn through the chaos with a calm, absolute authority, his presence alone parting the sea of armed men. They reached the heavy oak doors of his private study located deep within the secure interior of the mansion.

He pushed the doors open and ushered them inside, locking the heavy brass deadbolt behind them. The study was a sanctuary of dark wood, leather bindings, and soft, amber lighting. It was quiet here, insulated from the frantic preparations outside.

Dante set Nora down gently on a plush leather sofa near a crackling fireplace. "Stay here, Nora. You are safe now."

He turned to his father, guiding the exhausted older man to a comfortable armchair. "Rest, Father. The doctor is on his way."

Finally, Dante turned to Evelyn. The twenty-five-year-old housemaid was standing awkwardly near the center of the room, her hands still clutching her white apron. She looked entirely out of place in the inner sanctum of the mafia boss.

"Sit, Evelyn," Dante commanded gently, gesturing toward an armchair opposite the sofa.

Evelyn complied, her legs feeling shaky. The adrenaline of the evening was finally wearing off, leaving her exhausted and hyper-aware of the massive shift in her reality. She smoothed the skirt of her fitted black maid dress, her expressive eyes darting nervously around the room.

Dante walked over to a crystal decanter on his desk, pouring a small measure of amber liquid into a glass. He brought it to Evelyn, pressing the heavy crystal into her trembling hands.

"Drink," he instructed softly. "It will help settle your nerves."

Evelyn took a small sip, the burn of the alcohol grounding her slightly. She looked up at Dante, her fair, rosy skin pale in the amber light.

"Did I cause a war, Mr. Voss?" Evelyn whispered. "If I hadn't opened the trunk... if Nora hadn't heard the cough..."

"Do you believe a war is a high price to pay for the truth?" Dante asked, pulling up a chair to sit directly in front of her, their knees almost touching. "She imprisoned my father, Evelyn. My daughter was in a room with a murderer. There is no universe in which I would allow her to breathe free air after that."

"But her family... they are powerful," Evelyn said, her voice shaking.

"Are they more powerful than a son seeking vengeance?" Dante asked, his dark eyes hardening into twin points of icy resolve. "Do not worry about the Cross family, Evelyn. I will handle them. You just need to focus on surviving tonight."

"She is right to be worried, Dante," Arthur rasped from his armchair, his voice gaining a fraction of strength. "Elena's father, old man Cross, is a ruthless bastard. He will not accept her imprisonment quietly. He has been amassing weapons for months. I found the financial ledgers hidden in Elena's suite before she caught me. She was funneling our money to arm her own family for a takeover."

"A hostile takeover orchestrated from within my own house," Dante mused, his sharply defined jaw setting into unyielding granite. "It seems I have been too trusting."

"You were busy securing the northern ports, son," Arthur said gently. "She used your ambition as a smokescreen."

Before Dante could respond, the secure phone on his desk began to ring. The shrill, encrypted tone shattered the silence of the study.

Dante sighed, a harsh, frustrated sound escaping his chest. He stood up, the cold, calculating mask of the syndicate boss slipping back over his angular features instantly. He strode to the desk and picked up the receiver.

"Report," Dante commanded.

"Boss, it's Silas," the capo's voice crackled through the speaker. "The Cross family has mobilized. Their scouts were just spotted probing the eastern perimeter. They know we have Elena."

"Did they attempt a breach?" Dante asked, his voice devoid of panic, asking the question with tactical precision.

"Not yet," Silas replied. "They are massing numbers. Old man Cross just sent an encrypted message. He demands his daughter back within the hour, or he will flatten the estate."

"Does an old man with a bruised ego truly believe he can issue ultimatums at my gates?" Dante asked, his hand tightening around the receiver. "Reinforce the eastern walls. Issue armor-piercing rounds to the snipers on the roof. If a single vehicle crosses the property line without my authorization, turn it to scrap metal."

"Understood, Boss. We are ready," Silas confirmed before the line went dead.
