Chapter 1

The evening banquet inside Victor Hawthorne’s sprawling mansion was a breathtaking display of wealth, power, and unspoken danger. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the vaulted ceilings, casting a warm, golden light across the gilded mirrors that lined the vast dining hall. The illumination danced elegantly over the cream marble floors and highlighted the rich textures of the carved walnut furniture. Surrounding the long banquet table were heavy velvet dining chairs, occupied by the city’s elite. Tall ivory candles glowed steadily inside ornate brass candelabras, their flickering flames reflecting off the polished silverware, fine porcelain plates, and delicate crystal glasses. The air was filled with the low hum of conversation, carried entirely in crisp American accents, as guests with fair, rosy skin engaged in the delicate dance of mafia politics.
At the head of the banquet table stood Victor Hawthorne. At thirty-two, the mafia boss possessed a handsome, aggressively masculine presence that commanded absolute authority. His broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. His face was a landscape of harsh, aristocratic angles, featuring a sharply defined jawline and neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, dark hair was swept back flawlessly. As he reached for his crystal glass, the ambient light caught the artistic tattoos across his hands and fingers, their generous spacing wrapping around a heavy family signet ring. A luxury wristwatch gleamed at his cuff, and a small, distinct tattoo marked his neck. He watched the room with a cold, calculating gaze, an apex predator amidst a flock of silk-clad sheep.
Beside him stood Celeste Wren, his twenty-nine-year-old fiancée. She was a vision of high-society perfection in an elegant satin evening gown that clung to her curves, her fair, rosy skin glowing beneath the chandeliers. Dazzling diamond earrings swayed gently from her lobes as she conversed with a nearby senator. To the untrained eye, Celeste was the perfect mafia bride, radiating warmth and grace. But beneath her polished, reassuring smile lay a calculating attention, a sharp and ruthless ambition that missed absolutely nothing.
Moving quietly through the periphery of the grand room was Eva Brooks. At twenty-five, the maid possessed a breathtaking, gentle beauty. Her delicate features and highly expressive eyes were framed by fair skin and dark hair pulled into a loose, low bun. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist and a short A-line skirt. The pristine white of her apron, collar, and cuffs contrasted sharply with the dark fabric, matching the white ruffled maid headband that sat perfectly in her hair.
Eva navigated the cream marble floors with careful, precise gestures that revealed a deep, underlying vulnerability. Whenever she stepped near the head of the table, a subtle shift occurred in the atmosphere. Victor’s dark eyes would track her movements, a silent, heavy tether pulling between them. It was a quiet, mutual affection, completely unspoken but undeniably present.
As Eva approached the carved walnut sideboard to tend to the brass candelabras, Victor watched her. He did not smile, nor did he offer a statement of his affection, for the boss of the Hawthorne family spoke exclusively in questions.
"Is the wax burning too close to the silver, Eva?" Victor asked, his deep, low, measured voice cutting through the nearby chatter.
"I am just adjusting the tray, sir," Eva replied softly, her American accent trembling slightly under his intense gaze. "It will only take a moment."
"Do you need assistance with the heavier pieces?" Victor asked, the artistic tattoos on his hand flexing slightly as he leaned toward her.

Before Eva could answer, Celeste stepped closer, her polished smile tightly fixed. "She is perfectly capable of handling a few candles, isn't she, darling?"
Victor did not look at his fiancée. His eyes remained locked on Eva. "Is there any reason she should struggle when I am standing right here?"
