Chapter 5

The silence in the dining hall stretched taut, a physical weight that pressed down upon the seated guests. The gentle golden warmth of the crystal chandeliers illuminated the courageous resolve that slowly hardened on Mae’s softly oval face. She stood tall in her sophisticated black maid dress, her neatly tied white apron pristine against the dark fabric.

Mae looked directly into Gideon’s cold, perceptive eyes. She saw the terrifying power of the Mafia boss, but beneath it, she recognized an unyielding, protective loyalty to his mother.

She took a slow, steadying breath.

“It’s hiding the bruises,” Mae stated.

Her voice was soft and strained, yet the words carried clearly across the dead silent room, shattering the elegant illusion of the evening like a hammer against glass. The bright, clear lighting offered no shadows for the truth to hide within.

A collective, stifled gasp rippled through the gathered relatives and associates. To accuse the future bride of physically abusing the beloved matriarch of the family was an act of either profound bravery or suicidal foolishness.

Juliette’s fair, rosy skin drained of color, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated panic. "She is lying!" Juliette shrieked, entirely abandoning her polished social poise.

Gideon did not look at Juliette. He slowly turned his head to look down at his fragile, seventy-three-year-old mother.

Esther sat trembling in her silk dinner dress. She looked up at her son, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. For weeks, she had endured the rough handling, the pinching, and the cruel, hushed threats from the woman who sought to replace her as the lady of the house. She had been too frightened to speak, terrified of causing a rift in her son's happiness. But seeing the brave young maid stand up for her gave the elderly woman a sudden, desperate surge of courage.

Esther looked at Mae and gave a slight, almost imperceptible nod of permission.

Taking the silent cue, Mae stepped closer to the elderly woman. With gentle, careful fingers, the housemaid reached out and opened the intricate clasp of the broad gold cuff.

The heavy metal parted. Mae slowly lowered the bracelet onto the white damask tablecloth.

The removal of the jewelry exposed the horrifying truth beneath. Wrapping entirely around Esther’s frail, pale wrist were deep, angry, mottled purple and black bruises. They were clearly the violent, unmistakable marks of a harsh, punishing grip—fingers that had squeezed the elderly woman's arm with malicious, terrifying force.

The room erupted in a chorus of shocked murmurs. The visual evidence was undeniable.

Gideon’s expression did not change, but the temperature immediately surrounding him plummeted to absolute zero. He moved with a slow, agonizingly deliberate grace. He reached out his large, tattooed hand and settled it gently, protectively, under his mother’s bruised wrist, supporting her frail arm with profound, heartbreaking tenderness.

He did not need to ask who had done it. He slowly raised his dark, perceptive eyes, locking them entirely onto the woman standing opposite him in the sculpted satin evening gown.
