Chapter 9

The heavy, reinforced steel door of the subterranean safe room sealed shut with a definitive, mechanical thud, cutting Ada and Leo off entirely from the sprawling mansion above. The bunker was a stark contrast to the bright, luminous elegance of the upper floors. It was a utilitarian fortress of thick concrete and harsh fluorescent lighting, stocked with emergency provisions, independent communication arrays, and medical supplies.

Ada stood trembling in the center of the room, holding the young boy tightly against her side. Leo looked around the cavernous bunker, his eyes wide with renewed fear.

"Are the bad men coming back?" Leo whispered, his voice shaking.

"No, sweetie," Ada lied smoothly, dropping to her knees to look him in the eyes. "Mr. Wolfe is making sure they never come back. We just have to wait here for a little while."

She guided him to a leather sofa in the corner and pulled a thick, warm blanket over him. She sat on the edge of the cushions, staring blankly at the heavy steel door, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The titanium lanyard around her neck felt like a physical weight, a constant reminder of the profound, terrifying trust the mafia boss had placed in her.

The silence within the bunker was agonizing. Ada had no idea what was happening above ground. She didn't know if the rival families had breached the gates, or if Cassian was safe. Every passing minute stretched into an eternity of agonizing suspense.

Suddenly, a low, muffled thud vibrated through the concrete walls, followed closely by a rapid series of sharp, rhythmic cracks.

The assault had begun. The heavy gunfire was muffled by tons of earth and steel, but the vibrations were undeniable. The rival factions hadn't waited for the tribunal to convene; they were launching a full-scale preemptive siege on the Wolfe estate.

Ada gasped, instinctively throwing her body over Leo, shielding the child with her own frame as the bunker trembled slightly. She squeezed her eyes shut, praying fervently for the gunfire to stop.

Minutes bled into an hour. The intermittent thuds and cracks continued, painting a terrifying mental picture of the violent war raging above them. Ada sat paralyzed, her hands clamped tightly over her ears.

Then, the secure communication console on the desk across the room suddenly flared to life. The incoming transmission light flashed a bright, urgent red.

Ada scrambled off the sofa, her legs shaking, and rushed over to the console. She stared at the flashing button, terrified of what she might hear. Was it Marcus reporting that the house had fallen?

She took a deep, shuddering breath and pressed the receiver button.

"Hello?" Ada asked, her voice cracking horribly.

"Is he safe?" a deep, familiar voice demanded through the static.

Ada collapsed against the edge of the desk, tears of profound relief flooding her eyes. It was Cassian. The low, rumbling timber of his voice was the most beautiful sound she had ever heard.

"He's safe, Cassian," Ada sobbed quietly into the microphone. "Are you okay? Is it over?"

"Do I sound like a man who is losing?" Cassian asked smoothly, his tone projecting absolute, terrifying confidence. "The Cole family severely underestimated our perimeter defenses. They are currently bleeding out in my courtyard. The primary assault has been repelled."

"Thank god," Ada breathed, wiping her tears away. "Can we come out?"

"Is the house secure?" Cassian countered, his voice dropping into a cautious, lethal register. "No. We have reports of a secondary team attempting to breach the east wing. They are looking for the entrance to the bunker. I need you to stay exactly where you are, Ada. Do you understand me?"

May you like

"Yes. I understand," Ada promised fiercely.

Before he could say anything else, a massive, deafening explosion rocked the entire estate. The bunker shuddered violently, the fluorescent lights flickering wildly before dying completely, plunging Ada and the child into absolute, terrifying darkness.
