Chapter 6

Damian broke first.
He had always been the weaker brother.
Victor knew it. William saw it.
“You want to know why Elena disappeared?” Damian asked.
Victor turned on him.
“Don’t.”
Damian laughed nervously.
“You’re still scared of a dead man.”
Victor’s face hardened.
Damian looked at William.
“Your father ordered Daniel Reynolds removed.”
William’s jaw tightened.
“Removed how?”
Damian swallowed.
“Not killed.”
Victor scoffed.
“Careful.”
Damian ignored him.
“He wanted Daniel frightened out of Elena’s life. Vincent told us to make sure he understood what happened to men who dragged Parker blood into ordinary lives.”
William’s hands curled.
“What did you do?”
“We took him.”
Emma was visible through the glass.
Eating quietly.
Unaware.
William kept his voice low.
“Where?”
“An old Parker cabin.”
“How long?”
“Three days.”
William’s face went cold.
“And Elena?”
“She thought he left.”
There it was.
The first fracture.
Vincent had not merely disapproved of Elena’s marriage.
He sabotaged it.
Damian continued.
“Daniel came back eventually.”
“Then?”
“Elena already hated your father.”
Victor suddenly laughed.
“Hated him? She wanted him destroyed.”
William turned.
“Why?”
Victor’s expression shifted.
“Because Daniel told her what happened.”
“That’s not enough.”
Victor stared at him.
William knew it.
Elena had lived with betrayal from their father for years.
Something else made her disappear completely.
“What did she find?”
Victor looked toward the dining room.
Then back at William.
“The ledger.”
“What was in it?”
Victor’s face hardened.
“Your father’s real inheritance plan.”
William stared.
Vincent had publicly left control to William.
That was old history.
Victor shook his head.
“No.”
He understood William’s thought.
“The organization was never the part Elena cared about.”
“Then what?”
Victor took a breath.
“Children.”
William went still.
“What children?”
Victor’s eyes moved toward Emma.
Then Noah.
And suddenly William understood why Rachel had told Emma to find him.

The ledger did not decide who inherited money.
It recorded which children Vincent considered legitimate enough to survive inside the Parker family.
