Chapter 17

One year later, Emma still carried the old photograph.

But she no longer kept it hidden inside her coat.

It sat framed beside her bed.

Elena.

Daniel.

Emma.

A family before fear scattered it.

Noah had learned to walk by then. Badly.

He spent most mornings falling against furniture and laughing like the floor had personally challenged him.

Emma started school.

The first week, she brought half her lunch home every day.

William noticed.

He did not mention it.

By the third week, the containers came back empty.

One evening, William took Emma and Noah to Laurent’s.

The same marble bar.

The same private dining room.

The plate-warmer trolley had been replaced.

The wine-label display too.

Emma stopped near the place where Victor knocked the steak from her hands.

William watched her.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

Then she walked toward a table where a waiter was clearing untouched food.

William’s body tensed before he could stop it.

Emma looked at the plate.

Then at him.

“Can I ask for more instead?”

William smiled.

“Yes.”

She did.

The waiter brought her a fresh plate.

Emma carried it back to the table and immediately broke one piece of bread in half.

William watched.

She gave the smaller piece to Noah.

Not because she feared food would disappear.

Because he wanted some.

There was a difference.

Rachel joined them later.

She brought the ledger.

William had kept it locked away for a year.

He looked at it.

“Ready?”

Rachel nodded.

William opened the fireplace.

Emma watched from the table.

“What’s that?”

“Old family rules.”

“Bad ones?”

“Yes.”

She thought about that.

Then went back to feeding Noah tiny pieces of bread.

William fed the first page into the fire.

Then another.

Names curled into black edges.

WATCH.

REMOVE.

NO ACCESS.

All gone.

He kept Elena’s recording.

The photograph.

The letters.

History did not need to disappear.

Only the rules that demanded children pay for it.

One year earlier, Emma had come to Laurent’s asking for food nobody wanted.

May you like

She left with the one thing Elena had tried to give her all along.

A place in the family that did not have to be earned by surviving it.
