Chapter 3

The silence in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating pressure. The tall ivory candles flickering inside their ornate brass candelabras seemed to be the only things moving in the entire, luminous space. The clear, clean lighting left absolutely no shadows for Vivienne’s cruelty to hide within.

The words hung in the air, a devastating accusation that shattered the polished illusion of the Crowne empire. A collective, quiet gasp rippled through the fifty elite guests. Sebastian Crowne was a monster to his enemies, a ruthless warlord who commanded the city with an iron fist, but everyone in the syndicate knew he treated the people under his protection—his staff, his family—with fierce, unyielding loyalty. To suggest he would strike a woman in his own home was an insult to his very nature.

Sebastian froze. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching in his broad chest. His cold eyes looked down at the joined hands resting between them. The delicate, trembling fingers of the housemaid were pressed against his artistic tattoos, a stark physical manifestation of the quiet, mutual affection they shared. He felt a sharp, agonizing twist in his chest at the thought that his own son believed him capable of hurting the woman he cared for.

Before the mafia boss could process the sheer magnitude of the revelation, a small, fragile voice broke the tableau.

Owen, still sitting rigidly in his velvet chair, slowly turned his head. The little boy’s fair cheeks were pale, and his small shoulders were drawn inward defensively. He looked directly from the joined hands of his father and the housemaid toward Vivienne, bypassing his father's protective frame.

Tears gathered rapidly along Owen’s lower eyelids, making his eyes shine brilliantly under the cascading crystal chandeliers. The five-year-old’s expression remained deeply confused, unable to reconcile the tender connection he saw before him with the terrifying threats he had been forced to endure all week.

"You said Daddy would kill Elena," Owen said.

The childish American accent sliced through the heavy silence, exposing the absolute, monstrous cruelty of the woman in the elegant satin gown. He spoke quietly, with a frightened, unshakable certainty that cut straight to the bone.

Sebastian’s breath stopped entirely. He looked briefly toward Owen, a profound, restrained hurt washing over his movie-star handsome face. The pain in his eyes was palpable, softening the harsh, lethal tension of his features for a fraction of a second. His own child had been subjected to severe psychological torture.

Slowly, terrifyingly, Sebastian’s eyes shifted. The movement was predatory, his gaze moving first toward Vivienne, followed by a slow, deliberate turn of his head. His sharply defined jaw tightened until the bone threatened to snap under the pressure, the extremely short stubble on his face bristling with suppressed, explosive violence.

He held Vivienne’s eyes in a cold, furious, and unwavering stare that promised absolute destruction. The mafia boss said nothing. His silence was infinitely more dangerous than a scream, stripping away her diamonds, her satin gown, and her lies, exposing the cruel, power-hungry monster trembling beneath. Every single guest in the room remained hyper-attentive, paralyzed by the overwhelming, lethal energy radiating from Sebastian Crowne.
