Chapter 6

The collective silence of the wealthy, powerful guests transformed into a suffocating vacuum. The level of calculated, psychopathic ambition required to murder a helpless elderly woman by sabotaging her wheelchair, and then attempt the same tactic on the syndicate boss, sickened the men and women at the tables.
Antonia’s polite, reassuring smile disappeared instantly. The facade completely shattered.
Her eyes settled on Tobias for a fraction of a second, filled with a mixture of profound panic and vicious, unadulterated anger. Then, her gaze moved anxiously, frantically, back toward Marcus. She was desperately searching his face for any sign of mercy, any indication that he might forgive the ultimate betrayal.
"Marcus, he is lying!" Antonia shrieked, pulling violently against his grip on her arm, though she could not break free. She pointed her free, diamond-clad hand at the little boy. "He is a traumatized child! His mother died two years ago, and his mind is completely broken! He invents things! The maid put him up to this!"
"Is it customary for a grieving child to invent the specific mechanical failures of medical equipment to slander his father's fiancée?" Marcus asked.
His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pauses striking like the heavy toll of a funeral bell.
The camera shifted to a tight close-up of Marcus.
The bright, luminous colors of the dining hall felt like a harsh interrogation spotlight, emphasizing the lethal stillness that overtook the Mafia boss.
Marcus looked briefly toward Tobias. He held his son's gaze for a brief, painful beat. He absorbed the sheer trauma radiating from his boy, the innocent child who had been forced to carry the crushing weight of a terrifying secret, terrorized by the very woman who was supposed to become his stepmother. The rigid lines of Marcus's angular face softened by a fraction of a millimeter toward the boy, a silent promise of absolute, uncompromising protection.
Then, he slowly shifted his eyes.
His gaze moved across the gold-rimmed porcelain and crystal stemware, locking directly onto Antonia's eyes. A slight, predatory turn of his head followed, elevating his posture to its maximum, terrifying height, even while seated in the wheelchair.
His jaw firmed almost imperceptibly, the muscles flexing visibly beneath his extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His mouth became completely still, settling into a hard, unforgiving line. The warmth vanished entirely from his expression, replaced by the dark, empty void of an executioner.
He held Antonia’s gaze with a cold, knowing stare.

Silence. The visual standoff suspended the dining hall in a state of impending doom. Every single guest in the massive, opulent room remained perfectly attentive, facing him, paralyzed by the public unmasking of the future bride. The silence was deafening, ringing in the ears of everyone present. No one dared to breathe, waiting for the apex predator to strike.
The end of the visual prompt left the room trapped in this suffocating vacuum of terror, before Antonia could even formulate another pathetic response.
