Chapter 9

The quiet that descended upon the dining gallery was profound. The bright, cinematic lighting illuminated the overturned chairs, the abandoned crystal glasses, and the torn succession papers resting on the table. The war was over, but the adrenaline still pulsed heavily in the air.

Lowen let out a long, slow breath. The rigid tension that had locked his broad shoulders relaxed by a fraction of an inch. He leaned his head back against the chair, closing his eyes as a wave of intense physical exhaustion washed over him. The pain in his knee was a dull, throbbing ache, but it was stabilized.

"Sir?" a soft, hesitant voice broke the silence.

Lowen opened his eyes. Merrin was still crouched beside his chair, her hands resting in her lap over her white apron. She looked incredibly small amidst the grand, chaotic aftermath of the room, her expressive eyes filled with residual worry.

"Are you alright, Merrin?" Lowen asked, his deep voice softening entirely, losing the lethal, commanding edge it had held moments before.

"I am fine, Mr. Calderidge," Merrin replied, her voice trembling slightly. "Are you in pain? Do you need me to fetch the doctor?"

"I don't need a doctor," Lowen said quietly. He leaned forward, reaching down to offer her his hand. "I need you to stand up. You shouldn't be on the floor."

Merrin looked at his large, tattooed hand. She hesitated for a moment before placing her small, delicate fingers into his palm. His grip was warm and surprisingly gentle as he helped her rise to her feet.

She stood before him, smoothing her fitted black maid dress, her heart racing as she looked down at the handsome, dangerous man who had just reasserted his dominance over an entire criminal empire.

"You saved my life tonight, Merrin," Lowen stated, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. "If you hadn't shoved her, if you hadn't secured the brace... I wouldn't have been able to stand my ground."

"I just did what I had to do, sir," Merrin whispered, her cheeks flushing a deep, rosy pink. "She was going to hurt you."

"Do you realize the danger you put yourself in?" Lowen asked, his brow furrowing as he studied her beautiful face. "She had armed men ready to kill. You are a housemaid. You are not supposed to fight my battles."

"I am not just a maid to you, am I?" Merrin asked, the question slipping out before she could stop it. The quiet, mutual affection they had shared in stolen glances over the past year demanded to be spoken.

Lowen stared at her, the truth of her words echoing in the vast, empty room. He had trusted her more than his own blood. He had watched her risk everything for him.

"No," Lowen answered softly, his voice a low, magnetic rumble. "You are not just a maid."

He reached out, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear, grazing the edge of her white lace headband. The touch sent a jolt of electricity straight to her core.

May you like

"What happens now?" Merrin asked, leaning almost imperceptibly into the warmth of his hand.

"Now," Lowen said, a faint, genuine smile finally touching his sharp jawline. "We rebuild. But we don't do it alone."
