Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a warm golden light across the ivory wall panels and gilded moldings of the sprawling mansion. It was a crowded evening birthday dinner, a celebration that masked the ruthless, blood-stained reality of the criminal empire it honored. Tall candles glowed fiercely in heavy silver candelabras, their flickering flames dancing among arrangements of pristine white roses. Crystal stemware and fine porcelain gleamed atop polished walnut tables, while the city’s most dangerous elites sat comfortably in plush champagne velvet chairs. Generous illumination clearly revealed every face, highlighting the fair, rosy skin of the American aristocracy that ruled the underground.

Diana Reed stood quietly near a carved marble fireplace, observing the room with the trained, invisible vigilance of a seasoned housemaid. Beautiful like a movie star, her softly oval face, delicate cheekbones, and expressive brows were framed by dark hair pinned into an immaculate, loose French twist. Her slender figure and graceful posture were accentuated by a fitted black maid dress with a cinched waist, a short A-line skirt, and a pristine white apron. Her white collar and cuffs were perfectly starched.

At the center of the room's gravity stood Vincent Crowne, the mafia boss. He was movie-star handsome, with powerful shoulders filling out a tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharp jaw were shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his forehead. His cold, observant eyes scanned the room. Refined artistic tattoos marked his hands and fingers with generous spacing, and a small neck tattoo peeked above his collar.

"The waterfront shipment arrives at midnight," whispered a capo, approaching Vincent with a crystal glass of bourbon.

Vincent adjusted his wristwatch, his heavy family signet ring catching the golden light. "Have the harbor patrols been paid their usual sum?"

"Yes, boss," the capo replied, nodding quickly before retreating.

Beside Vincent stood Elara Voss, his mistress and the newly established lady of the house. She wore a sculpted satin evening gown that clung to her curves, diamond earrings flashing with every tilt of her head. An ornate diamond bracelet wrapped around her wrist, glittering as she maintained a flawless, affectionate public smile.

"It is a beautiful party, isn't it?" Elara purred, resting her hand on Vincent's tailored arm. "Are you enjoying your birthday?"

"Could a man ask for a more illuminating evening?" Vincent replied, his deep, low voice vibrating with a deliberate, controlled pause.

Diana moved gracefully toward a large, gilded portrait hanging beside the dining table. A tall candle on the console beneath it had begun to dim. She raised a taper to relight the wick. The flame caught, bright and warm.

Suddenly, a deliberate puff of air blew through a narrow ventilation gap beside the portrait’s heavy frame. The candle extinguished instantly.

Diana froze, her expressive brows drawing together. Before she could process the strange draft, two faint, rhythmic knocks sounded from directly behind the painted canvas. Diana paused, her heart hammering against her ribs, the smoking taper still raised in her trembling hand.
