Chapter 7

The medium wide shot framed the immediate, terrifying fallout of Greta’s confession. The bright, airy colors of the dining hall felt suddenly charged with an explosive, high-voltage tension. The clean whites of the table linens and the polished highlights of the silver cutlery shimmered beneath the warm golden light, a stark contrast to the dark reality of the confrontation.
Daphne Vance was entirely consumed by panic. Her fair, rosy skin was flushed a dark, angry crimson. Blinded by the catastrophic realization that her control over the matriarch had been exposed, she made a fatal, unforced error. She abandoned her sophisticated poise and lashed out with arrogant entitlement.
Daphne looked directly at Greta, her eyes blazing with absolute hatred.
“But I removed them myself.”
The words escaped quietly, slipping off her tongue in a rush of defensive justification before she could stop them.
The moment the sentence hung in the air, Daphne realized what she had done. Her mouth snapped shut. The furious, defensive energy drained from her body, replaced by a sudden, paralyzing terror. She had just publicly confessed to intentionally disabling the elderly woman's hearing aid. She could not recover her sympathetic smile. Her face froze in a mask of absolute ruin.
Soren moved.
He did not rush, nor did he display any outward sign of explosive anger. He simply stepped seamlessly beside his mother’s ivory upholstered chair. In one deliberate, protective motion, he positioned his broad, powerful frame to keep Greta securely at his shoulder, acting as an impenetrable wall shielding both his mother and the brave housemaid from his fiancée.
His polished leather shoes made no sound on the floor. The refined artistic tattoos across his hands flexed as he rested his palm gently on the back of his mother's chair.
Soren’s slow, knowing look settled heavily on Daphne.
He didn't ask a question immediately. He let the silence stretch, allowing the crushing weight of her own confession to suffocate her. The cold, perceptive eyes of the Mafia boss dissected her character, finding nothing but rot and treacherous ambition beneath the satin and diamonds.
Daphne pressed her lips tightly together. She could not formulate an excuse. She stared at the man she had planned to marry, realizing that the formidable intellect she had so arrogantly underestimated had just trapped her perfectly.
"Is there a medical benefit to intentionally deafening an elderly woman?" Soren finally asked.
His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pauses striking like a physical blow.
"Soren, please, you have to understand," Daphne stammered, her American accent trembling uncontrollably. "She was becoming easily overwhelmed by the noise of the household. The doctors said overstimulation was bad for her heart. I was only trying to give her peace."

"Does forced silence bring peace, or does it merely ensure compliance?" Soren inquired, his tone dropping even lower, completely devoid of any warmth.
The guests remained absolutely silent and attentive, paralyzed by the public dismantling of the future bride. But the true devastation of the evening had not yet been fully unleashed.
