Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers suspended from the vaulted ceiling of the private hotel ballroom bathed the grand space in a brilliant, warm golden light. It was an atmosphere of absolute, overwhelming opulence, designed specifically to mask the lethal reality of the men and women occupying the room. Ivory columns stretched toward intricately gilded mirrors that reflected the carved marble walls, multiplying the glow of the room into infinity. Tall ivory candles flickered gently inside heavy silver candelabras, their dancing flames illuminating low, meticulous arrangements of pristine white roses. Crystal glasses clinked against fine gold-rimmed porcelain, and the sophisticated murmur of crisp American accents floated above the polished walnut tables and champagne velvet chairs. The generous illumination left no corner in shadow, clearly revealing the fair, rosy-cheeked faces of the city’s most dangerous underworld elite.

At the center of the head table sat Warren Blackthorne. He was a mafia boss of terrifying repute, yet he possessed the movie-star handsome features of a classic leading man. His powerful, broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly across his forehead. Cold, perceptive eyes surveyed the ballroom with the calculation of an apex predator. Refined artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers with generous spacing, contrasting sharply with the heavy family signet ring and the polished wristwatch he wore. A small, intricate neck tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.

"The evening is progressing beautifully, isn't it, Senator?" a syndicate lieutenant asked, raising a glass of vintage wine toward the head table.

Warren stared at his crystal glass, his face an unreadable mask of masculine stone. He turned his head slightly, his deep, low voice vibrating through the space with a measured, deliberate pause. "Do you believe beautiful evenings occur by chance, Marcus?"

Opposite Warren sat his thirty-three-year-old fiancée, Simone Vale. She was draped in a sculpted champagne satin gown that clung flawlessly to her slender figure. Diamond earrings caught the golden light, matching the massive engagement ring that rested heavily on her finger. She possessed elegant manners and offered a carefully reassuring public smile to the passing guests, playing the role of the devoted future bride to perfection.

Sitting quietly beside Warren was his seven-year-old son, Henry. Dressed in a cream shirt, a dark waistcoat, and polished shoes, the boy was unnaturally still. His rosy cheeks were pale, his small hands resting nervously in his lap. He was a quiet, observant child, and his worried eyes kept darting toward the service doors.

Moving gracefully among the velvet chairs was Daphne Hart. The twenty-seven-year-old housemaid was breathtakingly beautiful, with a softly heart-shaped face, expressive brows, and delicate cheekbones. Her fair skin caught the golden light, and her hair was arranged in a neat, loose braided twist. Her slender figure and graceful posture were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress featuring a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, a crisp white collar, and matching cuffs completed her uniform.

Beneath her polished exterior, Daphne was drowning in quiet terror. She held a silver serving tray, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. Earlier that evening, in the privacy of the hotel kitchens, Simone had cornered her. The socialite had issued a terrifying ultimatum: Daphne was to taste every single dish placed before Warren. Simone had framed it as a security measure, threatening immediate dismissal—and implied physical harm—if the housemaid refused. Now, as the main course approached, the true, horrifying weight of that demand was crushing the breath from Daphne's lungs.
