Chapter 1

The engagement dinner of Holden Ravenshaw was an orchestrated masterpiece of luminous perfection. A bright, airy atmosphere saturated the grand dining hall of the Ravenshaw estate, defying the dark, violent reality of the syndicate boss’s true life. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from vaulted ceilings, casting a soft, elegant golden light across intricately carved ivory-paneled walls and gilded ceiling moldings. The illumination was flawless, completely devoid of heavy shadows or muddy tints, revealing every detail in pristine clarity. Tall ivory candles flickered gently inside heavy silver candelabras, their reflections dancing across polished walnut tables, gold-rimmed porcelain, and immaculate crystal stemware. The air carried the delicate scent of white roses, masking the heavy, calculating tension of the powerful white American guests gathered in the velvet dining chairs.
At the absolute center of this radiant atmosphere stood Holden Ravenshaw. At forty-five, the Mafia boss possessed a movie-star-handsome masculinity that commanded immediate, suffocating submission. His broad, powerful shoulders stretched the fabric of a meticulously tailored dark three-piece suit. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was swept loosely back, though a few rogue strands fell casually over his forehead. His eyes were cold, perceptive, and terrifyingly intelligent. Refined artistic tattoos stretched across his hands and fingers with generous negative space, matching a small, elegant neck tattoo visible above his collar. A heavy family signet ring gleamed alongside his luxury wristwatch.
"The evening is flawless, Holden," a senior capo remarked, his crisp American accent carrying over the polite hum of conversation. "You honor us with this display."
Holden slowly turned his signet ring. "Is there any reason to celebrate an engagement with mediocrity, Thomas?"
His deep, low voice rolled through the space, punctuated by perfectly controlled pauses. It was a known, chilling rule of the formidable boss; his dialogue consisted exclusively of questions, a tactic that forced the listener into a constant state of defense and justification.
Standing directly opposite him was Lenora Vance. At thirty-three, his fiancée was the picture of aristocratic privilege. She wore a sculpted burgundy satin evening gown that accentuated her fair complexion and slender figure. Diamond earrings sparkled brilliantly against her jawline, matching the heavy engagement ring on her left hand. She offered a courteous, practiced smile to the guests, projecting an aura of complete, unbothered calm.
"Holden is a perfectionist," Lenora laughed smoothly, her voice melodic. "It is what makes him such a formidable leader. We wanted tonight to be a seamless reflection of our new life together, moving forward from the tragedies of the past."

"Does moving forward require us to forget the foundations we were built upon?" Holden inquired, his cold eyes shifting toward her for a fraction of a second before scanning the rest of the luminous room.
Before Lenora could formulate a charming response, a subtle shift in the room's atmosphere drew Holden's terrifyingly perceptive gaze toward the swinging doors of the dining hall.
