Chapter 3

The silence in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating pressure. The tall candles flickering inside their silver candelabras seemed to be the only things moving. The bright, luminous colors of the room felt painfully sharp, illuminating the exact moment the polished illusion of the Calder empire began to unravel.

Ambrose’s expression remained an unreadable mask of masculine stone. He stood immovably in his dark three-piece suit, his towering frame casting a protective shadow over the housemaid and the little girl. He did not immediately turn his gaze toward his fiancée. He let the deafening silence stretch, allowing the sheer magnitude of the housemaid's confession to settle over the thirty elite guests.

Felicity gripped the edge of the polished walnut table, her diamond engagement ring catching the light as her hand shook violently. She opened her mouth to speak, to scream a denial, to call the housemaid a liar, but her vocal cords were paralyzed by the sheer, overwhelming terror radiating from the man standing opposite her.

Before Ambrose could formulate his next calculated question, a small voice broke the tableau.

Maisie, still sitting rigidly in her elegant party dress, slowly turned her head. The little girl’s fair cheeks were pale, and her small shoulders were drawn inward defensively. She looked directly at Felicity, bypassing the terrifying crowd of adults. She searched the woman's face for reassurance, hoping that the cruel words she had heard earlier were just a terrible mistake.

Maisie's mouth tightened into a small, trembling line before the remembered words finally emerged.

"You said I was defective," Maisie said.

Her voice was small, wounded, and uncertain, entirely without anger. It was the simple, heartbreaking confusion of a child trying to understand why she was considered broken and disposable. The words hit the room with the force of a detonating bomb.

Ambrose froze. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching in his broad chest. His eyes lingered on Maisie for one silent, agonizing beat as the six-year-old’s words shattered the foundation of his reality. His eyes softened briefly, a flash of profound, unbearable heartbreak breaking through his cold exterior.

Slowly, terrifyingly, Ambrose’s eyes shifted. His head followed slightly, tracking across the white damask tablecloth until his gaze landed squarely on Felicity.

His sharply defined jaw tightened until the bone threatened to snap. His mouth settled into a firm, unforgiving line. Keeping his heavy, protective presence firmly beside his daughter, he fixed Felicity with a cold, unwavering stare. He held her gaze in complete, absolute silence. The mafia boss said nothing, his perceptive eyes stripping away her diamonds, her satin gown, and her lies, exposing the cruel, jealous monster trembling beneath.

Every single guest in the room remained completely, terrifyingly silent. The luminous, airy room offered no sanctuary to the woman caught in the crosshairs of his perceptive eyes. The celebration was officially poised on the edge of an abyss, waiting for Ambrose Calder to pull the trigger.
