Chapter 5

The eruption of violence was instantaneous. Mara, fueled by the primal, blinding rage of a mother whose child had been murdered, threw herself across the space separating the sideboard from the head table. The silver serving tray crashed to the cream marble floor, the tiny white shoes tumbling from the box and landing near the evergreen garlands.

"You killed her!" Mara screamed, her voice tearing through the opulent mansion. "You killed my baby!"

Before Mara's trembling fingers could reach the emerald fabric of Cressida's gown, a massive, immovable force intercepted her.

Donovan Hale moved with terrifying, predatory speed. He rose from his chair, his broad shoulders dominating the space, and stepped directly between Mara and Cressida. He did not grab the maid aggressively. Instead, he caught Mara by the upper arms, absorbing her forward momentum effortlessly against his tailored dark suit.

Mara thrashed wildly against his grip, sobbing hysterically, completely blind to the danger of assaulting the mafia boss. "Let me go! She killed Lily!"

"Mara," Donovan said.

His deep, controlled voice dropped a full octave, cutting through her hysteria like a perfectly sharpened blade. He allowed a measured, agonizing pause to stretch after her name. The sound was not a shout, but the absolute gravity of his tone commanded her immediate attention.

Mara stopped fighting. She looked up, her breathing ragged, tears streaming freely down her face. She met Donovan’s cold, observant eyes. In them, she saw no anger directed at her, only a quiet, terrifying promise of absolute retribution.

"Stay behind me," Donovan commanded softly.

He gently but firmly pushed Mara behind his broad back, using his towering masculine frame as an impenetrable physical shield against the rest of the room.

The shift in power was absolute. By physically shielding the housemaid and placing himself between her and his fiancée, Donovan had made his choice. He had drawn a line in the sand, and he had placed Mara and his son firmly on his side.

"Donovan, you cannot believe this insanity!" Cressida yelled, her voice pitching higher, echoing off the gilded wall panels. She pointed a shaking finger at the maid cowering behind him. "She is a servant! She is manipulating your son to destroy this family! You must have her thrown out!"

Donovan did not answer immediately. He stood perfectly still, a fortress of dark wool and muscle. He looked down at Evan, who was standing bravely by the leg of the dining chair.

"Evan," Donovan asked, his voice remaining low and steady. "Did you tell me the truth?"

"Yes, Daddy," Evan answered, his lower lip trembling, but his eyes resolute.

Donovan slowly turned his head, the natural, cinematic lighting highlighting the artistic tattoos on his neck. He looked out at the fifty guests—the capos, the relatives, the armed guards standing by the doors.

"Nobody moves," Donovan ordered. The command rippled across the crowded banquet tables. "Nobody leaves this room."

The heavy, mahogany double doors were immediately secured by Donovan's loyal enforcers. The click of the deadbolts was deafening. The guests remained perfectly attentive and utterly motionless, terrified to even draw a breath, waiting for the execution to begin. The Christmas Eve dinner had transformed into a tribunal.

Donovan finally turned his full, terrifying attention back to Cressida. The air between them dropped to freezing.

"Explain yourself, Cressida," Donovan said, his voice a lethal, vibrating rumble. "Before I run out of patience."
