Chapter 2

The silence that blanketed the dining hall was absolute and terrifying. The clinking of silver forks against fine china had completely ceased. The elite guests, hardened criminals and wealthy socialites alike, held their breath, their eyes darting nervously toward the exits. The atmosphere in the room had shifted from a celebratory engagement dinner to a potential execution ground in the span of thirty seconds. Lawrence Crowe’s cold, observant eyes remained locked on Estelle, his silence more deafening than any scream.
Estelle’s carefully constructed facade began to crack. The sculpted satin of her evening gown seemed to lose its shimmer as a cold sweat broke out across her collarbones. She let out a high-pitched, nervous laugh that echoed awkwardly against the marble fireplace and the ivory wall panels.
“Darling, please,” Estelle stammered, her hands fluttering in front of her as if to physically push the accusation away. “He is a child. He has an overactive imagination, fueled by trauma. You cannot possibly entertain this nonsense.”
Lawrence did not blink. He slowly withdrew his heavy hand from Hugo’s shoulder, turning his powerful frame fully toward the woman he had promised to marry. The tattoos on his hands flexed as he adjusted his tailored vest. His deep, quiet voice sliced through the tension.
“Do you believe I find amusement in this situation, Estelle?”
“No! No, of course not,” she replied quickly, her eyes darting toward the silent guests before snapping back to him. “But to accuse me of such a horrific act? In front of our friends? You must see that the boy is unwell. He needs a doctor, not an audience.”
Cleo Warren remained perfectly still behind Hugo’s chair, her hands folded neatly over her pristine white apron. Despite the danger radiating from the mafia boss, she stood her ground. Her expressive brows drew together in a look of quiet resolve, her delicate cheekbones catching the warm, golden light of the chandeliers.
Lawrence looked out over the sea of frozen guests. His sharp jaw was set in stone. He spoke to the crowd, his tone dangerously calm.
“Are you all waiting for a written invitation to leave my home? Do you wish to remain here and observe my family’s private affairs?”
The response was instantaneous. Chairs scraped violently against the polished hardwood floor as dozens of people scrambled to their feet. No one wanted to be in the room when Lawrence Crowe unleashed his wrath. Within moments, the grand dining hall was entirely empty, save for the four people remaining at the head table. The heavy mahogany doors clicked shut, sealing them inside.
Estelle took a tentative step toward Lawrence, reaching a trembling hand out to touch the lapel of his tailored suit.
“Darling, please, let us go upstairs and discuss this rationally,” she pleaded, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. “You know how much I love you. You know how much I care for Hugo.”
Lawrence stepped back smoothly, allowing her hand to fall into empty space. His wavy hair caught the candlelight as he tilted his head, his gaze burning right through her.
“Do you think it is wise to touch me right now, Estelle?”
“I just want to comfort you!” she cried out, genuine panic finally bleeding into her voice. She spun around to face Cleo, her sorrowful mask melting into a snarl of pure venom. “This is your doing! You put him up to this! You’ve been filling his head with lies to ruin my wedding!”

Lawrence stepped between the two women, blocking Estelle’s path to the maid.
“Why are you attempting to threaten my staff in my presence, Estelle? Do you believe I am incapable of interrogating her myself?”
