Chapter 1

The grand salon of the Ashford estate was a breathtaking monument to immense wealth and power, completely flooded with a brilliant, warm golden light that entirely lacked the harshness of winter outside. Enormous cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the painted ceilings, their myriad prisms catching the illumination and throwing radiant, dancing reflections across the polished marble floors. It was a space designed for intimidation masquerading as festive cheer. Carved walnut furniture lined the perimeter, framing the fifty elite guests, capos, and relatives seated on champagne velvet sofas. A towering Christmas tree sparkled brilliantly with thousands of golden fairy lights and thick crimson ribbons. Ivory candles glowed steadily in ornate brass candelabras, nestled perfectly among thick evergreen garlands that framed the massive stone fireplace. Elegantly dressed guests mingled freely, their crisp American accents blending into a sophisticated hum of holiday celebration.

At the center of this majestic display stood Damon Ashford. Thirty-three years old, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of a mafia boss who held the city in his grip. His broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a flawlessly tailored dark three-piece suit. His face was a landscape of harsh, aristocratic angles, featuring a sharp, angular jaw dusted with extremely short, meticulous stubble. His dark hair was naturally swept back, framing a face that commanded absolute authority. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch gleamed under the chandeliers. Artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers with deliberate spacing, and a small, distinct artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.

"The security on the eastern ports has been doubled for the holidays, Damon," an older capo remarked, raising his crystal glass of bourbon toward the towering boss. "We won't have any disruptions tonight."

"See that you don't, Marcus," Damon replied slowly, his deep, controlled voice cutting effortlessly through the ambient noise of the room. "I want this evening to be entirely peaceful. No syndicate business until tomorrow."

"Of course, boss," Marcus assured him, taking a sip of his drink. "You should focus on celebrating. Celeste has orchestrated a truly magnificent reception."

Damon’s dark eyes shifted toward the center of the room. At twenty-nine, his fiancée, Celeste Morrow, was a vision of high-society perfection. She wore a luxurious burgundy satin evening gown that clung flawlessly to her curves, her fair, rosy skin glowing beneath the warm light. Dazzling diamond earrings swayed gently from her lobes. Her public manner was impeccable, radiating a polished, reassuring smile as she greeted the syndicate members. She played the perfect future mafia wife, yet Damon felt nothing but a hollow chill whenever he looked at her.

"Yes," Damon murmured, his voice lacking any expected warmth. "She orchestrated everything perfectly."

Moving through the periphery of the room, near the towering Christmas tree, was Clara Wells. At twenty-five, the maid possessed a breathtaking, gentle beauty. Her delicate features and highly expressive eyes were framed by fair, clear skin. But tonight, she looked exhausted, moving with a deeply vulnerable manner. She wore a fitted black maid dress, but it was noticeably creased. Her pristine white apron was rumpled, and her white ruffled maid headband sat entirely crooked in her slightly disheveled hair. She carried a lightweight, shimmering star topper, making her way toward the tall wooden stepladder positioned beside the tree.
