Chapter 4

The original Bellini table had a false underside.

I had eaten beside it for years without knowing.

Rafe found the release only after fitting the completed moon pendant into a circular depression beneath the wooden apron. A narrow compartment slid open.

Inside was no money.

No jewelry.

No ledger.

Only seven black wooden tokens and a small cassette recorder wrapped in linen.

Marco went pale.

Lucia looked furious.

I picked up one token.

A Bellini crest was carved on one side.

A surname on the other.

Moretti.

Another read Calder.

Rafe saw his own family name and stopped.

“My father?”

Lucia’s voice sharpened.

“Old debts. Nothing more.”

Rafe looked at her.

“My father died saying Rachel Bellini saved his life.”

Lucia said nothing.

I inserted the cassette.

Static filled the room.

Then Rachel’s voice.

Twenty-four years vanished in one second.

I remembered that voice.

Barely.

I had been fourteen when she disappeared.

“Adrian, if you ever hear this, then Lucia failed to destroy everything.”

My hands went cold.

Claire began crying silently.

Rachel continued.

“I don’t know how old you’ll be. I don’t know whether your father will still control the family. But if Claire is standing beside you, believe her before you believe anyone who tells you she is nobody.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Sofia held tighter to her hand.

Rachel’s voice trembled.

“Claire is my daughter.”

Lucia muttered, “We know that.”

Then the recording continued.

“And if Lucia says I abandoned her, Lucia is lying.”

Claire looked up.

I stared at my aunt.

Rachel explained that she had discovered a private faction inside the Bellini family. Lucia and several relatives were using old family debts to build a second chain of command beneath my father.

The tokens identified the families they planned to control.

Then Rachel said Marco’s name.

He stood so quickly his chair overturned.

“She was insane.”

I looked at him.

Rachel’s voice kept playing.

“Marco was young when Lucia recruited him. If he stays with her, he will become exactly what she needs—a man angry enough to mistake being used for being chosen.”

Marco froze.

That sentence hurt him.

I could see it.

Then Rachel said one final thing before the tape clicked off.

“If Claire finds the moon, tell her I did not leave because I stopped loving her.”

Claire whispered, “Then why?”

Rafe turned the cassette over.

A second side remained.

Lucia stared at it.

May you like

“No.”

I pressed play.
