Chapter 16

Claire stayed at Bellini’s Cafe.
That surprised Rachel.
It surprised me too.
“You don’t have to work here anymore,” I told her.
She looked offended.
“I like working here.”
“You were shot here.”
“I’ve also been tipped twenty dollars for pouring one coffee.”
I almost smiled.
Sofia laughed openly.
Rachel watched Claire move through the cafe with her shoulder healing and something in her expression changed.
Pride.
Not because Claire had discovered Bellini blood.
Because she had built a life without it.
That mattered.
Marco returned once to apologize again.
Claire let him speak.
He did not blame Lucia this time.
That was progress.
“I attacked Adrian because I thought if he learned who you were, everything I’d spent twenty-four years pretending not to remember would become real.”
Claire looked at him.
“It was already real.”
“I know.”
She nodded.
No forgiveness.
Not yet.
But she let him leave without hatred.
Rachel began visiting every morning.
At first she sat in the corner and watched Claire work as though recovering twenty-four years one coffee cup at a time. Eventually Claire made her carry pastry baskets.
Rachel complained.
Sofia declared that “Grandma Rachel needs a job too.”
Nobody argued with Sofia.
One afternoon Rafe restored the restaurant-history display.
He asked me which photographs should return.
I handed him all of them.
Even the ones with Lucia.
Erasing history would only teach the same lesson Lucia had used against us: uncomfortable things disappear if powerful people dislike them enough.
But we changed one thing.
Rachel’s portrait no longer sat hidden inside a wooden block.
It stood in the center.
Beside it was a new photograph.
Rachel.
Claire.
Sofia between them.
Three generations linked not by command, but by survival.
Claire touched the completed moon pendant at her throat.
Rachel had given her the second half.
“You sure?” Claire asked.
Rachel smiled.
“I spent twenty-four years afraid someone would find it.”
She fastened it herself.
“I’d rather spend what’s left watching you wear it.”
Claire cried.
Sofia did too.

Then Sofia asked why everyone was crying when nobody was hurt.
For once, none of us had a good answer.
