Chapter 3

The silence that followed Ava’s innocent question was absolute and suffocating. The bright, cinematic lighting of the room offered absolutely no shadows for the guilty to hide within. Dante Caruso did not gasp. He did not shout. His reaction was terrifyingly precise and executed with the explosive speed of an apex predator.
Dante rose from his heavy leather chair. The tailored fabric of his dark three-piece suit pulled taut across his broad, muscular shoulders. He reached across the space separating them and instantly tore Celeste’s manicured hand away from Ava’s wrist. His grip was like an industrial vise, forceful enough to make Celeste gasp in pain before he violently shoved her arm away.
With a smooth, deeply masculine motion, Dante scooped Ava up and placed his daughter safely behind his legs, entirely shielding her small frame from the woman standing before him.
Celeste stumbled backward, her high heels scraping harshly against the floor. She gripped the edge of the dining table, her chest heaving as she frantically tried to reconstruct her shattered facade.
"Stop making things up," Celeste said coldly, glaring down at the little girl hiding behind Dante’s legs. Her American accent trembled with suppressed hysteria. "You are having a nightmare, Ava. You found that on the floor in the hallway. Do not lie to your father."
Dante did not look at his wife. He kept his broad back to the table, his physical presence creating an impenetrable wall of protection for his child. He slowly reached behind him. Ava, trusting her father completely, placed the heavy gold cufflink into his massive, calloused palm.
Dante brought his hand forward. He held the small object up to the bright, vivid light of the chandelier.
It was unmistakable. The heavy gold was molded into a distinct, custom geometric pattern. It was a bespoke piece, one of a set commissioned exclusively in Italy. Dante remembered the exact day they had arrived. He remembered the exact man who wore them.

The cold, sharp eyes of the Mafia boss narrowed into lethal, calculating slits. The charming, sophisticated host was entirely gone, replaced by a monster forged in decades of street violence and absolute power. His sharply defined jawline clenched so tightly that the muscles twitched visibly beneath his fair skin. The betrayal was not just a breach of his marriage; it was a profound, catastrophic insult to his bloodline, occurring under his own roof.
He slowly lowered his hand, his thumb tracing the engraved lines of the gold cufflink. The silence in the room stretched until it felt as though the very walls might shatter under the pressure. No one dared to speak. No one dared to move. They all waited for the king to pass his judgment.
