Chapter 1

The private tennis court of the Bancroft Club was bathed in bright, cinematic light, the late afternoon sun casting long, natural shadows across the manicured clay. It was less a sporting venue and more an arena for the city’s elite to posture, network, and assert dominance. Today, the courtside reception tables were crowded with forty of the club’s most influential donors, members, and staff, all gathered to witness the ongoing power struggle within the syndicate.

At the center of the court stood Kellan Ashbury. At thirty-two, he possessed the intimidating, masculine presence of a mafia boss, his broad shoulders easily filling out a tailored dark suit. He had shed his jacket in the heat, standing in his crisp white shirt and vest, his swept-back dark hair impeccably styled. His face was a landscape of sharp, aristocratic angles, featuring a defined jawline and neatly trimmed stubble. Refined, artistic tattoos crawled across his hands, disappearing beneath his cuffs, with a distinct mark visible on his neck. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch completed the image of terrifying authority.

Standing a few yards away, holding a small remote control, was Cedric Bancroft. At forty-one, Cedric was Kellan’s cousin and the director of this very club. He wore an expensive club jacket, tailored trousers, and leather loafers, his posture exuding arrogant entitlement. Cedric had spent the last hour holding court, subtly attempting to undermine Kellan’s authority in front of the syndicate’s key players.

Hovering near the courtside refreshment table was Briony Fairfax. At twenty-five, she was Kellan’s longtime housemaid, a woman of delicate, gentle beauty. Her highly expressive eyes darted nervously between the two men. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a pristine white apron, and a white lace maid headband securing her neatly pinned hair. Despite the overwhelming wealth surrounding her, her attention was focused entirely on Kellan.

Cedric smirked, raising the small plastic remote in his hand. He turned the heavy, industrial ball machine directly toward Kellan. Without warning, he triggered a short, aggressive burst.

Thwack. Thwack. Thwack.

High-velocity tennis balls struck Kellan brutally in the chest and shoulder. He didn't flinch, raising his tattooed forearms in a slow, measured defensive block, but one of the yellow spheres grazed violently against his cheek, leaving a bright red mark against his fair skin.

Several guests at the courtside tables erupted into laughter, raising their phones to record the supposed humiliation of the syndicate boss.

“Can’t dodge?” Cedric taunted loudly, his American accent dripping with mocking condescension. “Then you can’t lead.”

Briony’s eyes widened in horror. She didn't hesitate. Abandoning her station by the refreshments, she immediately approached Kellan, her black maid dress swishing against her legs. She stopped right in front of him, her chest heaving as she looked at the reddened mark on his cheek.

May you like

She reached out, gently steadying his muscular forearm with her trembling hands. She searched his hardened face, her lips parting as she whispered.

“Sir… are you hurt?”
