Chapter 2

The absolute silence in the grand dining room was a physical weight, pressing down on Lenna’s chest until she felt she could hardly breathe. The golden light from the tiered crystal chandeliers suddenly felt harsh and exposing. She stood frozen beside the polished walnut table, her hands clutching the crisp white fabric of her apron. She had risked her life to bring this broken man out of the shadows, and now, standing under the scrutiny of the mafia boss, she felt the sheer magnitude of her action.
Lenna maintained eye contact with Evren. She forced herself not to look away from his cold, perceptive eyes, which were searching her softly oval face with a terrifying, piercing intensity. Her expressive brows drew together in a mixture of fear and resolute defiance. Her fingers tightened fiercely against her apron.
"Her husband," Lenna answered. Her voice was quiet, fragile, but incredibly clear, carrying flawlessly across the dead silent room.
A collective, silent gasp seemed to ripple through the velvet dining chairs. The guests stared in unadulterated shock. The tragic widow, the woman poised to marry the head of the Hawthorne syndicate, was suddenly confronted by the ghost she claimed to have buried.
Before Evren could process the magnitude of the revelation, Celeste intervened.
Celeste smoothly adjusted her posture, the sculpted satin of her evening gown rustling softly against the upholstery. She met Evren’s stunned gaze with a small, strained smile, projecting the image of a bewildered, deeply offended fiancée attempting to shield her reputation from a cruel scam.
"My husband died last winter," Celeste stated, her delivery carefully measured, lacking the melodic sweetness she usually employed.
She offered the lie with practiced perfection, but her eyes desperately searched Evren’s angular face for any sign of acceptance, any indication that he would accept her version of reality and dismiss the elderly man and the housemaid. After speaking, Celeste briefly shifted her gaze, delivering a razor-sharp, venomous warning glance directly at Edward.
Evren did not nod. He did not agree. He moved with the predatory, liquid grace of a man who commanded an empire. Pushing his chair back, he rose slowly to his full, imposing height. He stepped smoothly beside Lenna and Edward, placing his broad shoulders and tailored dark suit directly between the frail old man and his frantic fiancée.
Edward looked past the towering mafia boss, looking directly at the woman who had promised to love him until death. The seventy-two-year-old man did not look angry. He looked profoundly, devastatingly broken. Moisture gathered rapidly along Edward’s lower eyelids, the tears catching the light of the tall candles.
Edward’s mouth trembles slightly before the words finally emerged.
"You poisoned me, Celeste," Edward said.
His voice carried wounded disbelief rather than triumph. It was the sound of a man confronting a nightmare he still couldn't fully comprehend.
Evren’s eyes remained on the elderly man for one long, silent beat. He absorbed the sheer vulnerability in Edward's posture, the undeniable truth written across the man's frail, trembling hands.
Then, Evren slowly shifted that terrifying gaze toward Celeste.

His head followed his eyes in a slight, deliberate turn. The small artistic tattoo on his neck became visible above his collar. The muscles in his sharply defined jaw firmed into unyielding granite. His expression became completely still, a terrifying void that swallowed all the golden light in the room.
He held Celeste’s eyes in cold, unwavering silence. He did not yell. He did not ask a question immediately. He simply stared at her, stripping away every layer of her satin and diamonds, exposing the rot underneath. Every guest remained perfectly attentive and utterly motionless, terrified to even draw a breath, waiting for the execution to begin.
