Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers bathed the grand dining room in a warm, golden light, creating a bright, airy, and luminous atmosphere. Every polished surface of Dorian Hale’s mansion seemed to capture and reflect the soft, elegant warmth of the evening. Tall ivory candles flickered inside glass hurricane holders, their dancing reflections shimmering across polished silver and crystal glasses. Carved walnut paneling, gilded mirrors, and towering marble columns surrounded the long tables, which were impeccably dressed in cream damask. Low arrangements of white roses were spaced perfectly, leaving the thirty elite guests clearly visible across the room.

Dorian Hale stood beside his designated place at the head of the family table. He was a mafia boss whose reputation was as dark as the tailored three-piece suit he wore, yet he was handsome as a movie star. Deeply masculine, he possessed powerful shoulders, an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline that was shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair swept back naturally, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his forehead. His cold, perceptive eyes surveyed the room. Refined artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers, utilizing generous negative space, and a small, intriguing tattoo peeked from his neckline.

"The evening is progressing flawlessly, is it not?" Camille Sloane asked, stepping to the opposite side of the table. She wore a sculpted silk evening gown that hugged her fair, rosy skin. Heavy diamond earrings sparkled in the warm light, matching the massive engagement ring on her finger.

Dorian looked at his fiancée, adjusting the heavy family signet ring on his tattooed hand. His deep, low voice rumbled with measured pauses. "Do you find perfection in such crowded rooms, Camille?"

Camille laughed, a melodic but calculated sound. "I find perfection in us, darling. Our guests are simply here to witness it. Don't you agree that this alliance will bring unprecedented peace to our families?"

"Have alliances ever been cemented without a cost?" Dorian asked, his cold eyes unreadable.

Across the room, Cora Winslow moved with silent grace. The housemaid was beautiful like a movie star, possessing a softly rounded cheeks, expressive brows, and a delicate nose. Her fair, rosy skin glowed beneath the golden light, and her hair was arranged in an immaculate, loose French twist. Her sophisticated black maid dress featured a cinched waist, a slim fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, along with a crisp white collar and cuffs, completed her polished, elegant look.

"Cora, make sure the wine glasses are replenished at table three," the head butler murmured as she passed.

"Of course, I will see to it immediately," Cora replied, her voice soft and professional.

She retrieved a bottle of vintage red, her slender figure moving seamlessly through the luxurious interior of warm gold, cream, and deep wood tones. Yet, beneath her elegant posture, a knot of deep anxiety twisted in her stomach. Earlier that evening, she had overheard Camille whispering sharply to little Maisie in the hallway. Cora knew a storm was brewing in this bright, sumptuous room, and she was terrified of the moment it would finally break.
