Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a warm, decadent golden light across the gilded ceiling moldings and ivory-paneled walls of the Cross mansion. It was a crowded evening birthday dinner, a lavish display of power and wealth that masked the ruthless reality of the criminal empire it celebrated. Tall candles glowed fiercely in heavy silver candelabras, their flickering flames reflecting off pristine white roses, fine porcelain, and crystal stemware. Polished walnut tables stretched across the expanse of the room, flanked by champagne velvet chairs occupied by the city’s most dangerous men and their adorned wives. The air was thick with the scent of roasted duck, expensive perfumes, and the sharp, metallic undercurrent of mafia politics.

At the center of the head table sat Callan Cross. He possessed a presence that devoured the oxygen in any room he entered. Handsome as a movie star, his broad, powerful shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit with lethal perfection. His angular face, dominated by a high-bridged nose and a sharply defined jaw, was framed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly across his forehead. He remained quiet, his cold, observant eyes missing nothing.

"The waterfront properties will be fully secured by next month, Callan," a senator seated to his left murmured, leaning in respectfully with a crystal glass of bourbon in his hand. "The local unions have completely stepped aside."

Callan slowly turned his head, the small artistic tattoo on his neck shifting slightly above his crisp white collar. The refined tattoos across his hands and fingers caught the light as he steepled them together.

"Is the wine to your liking, Senator?" Callan asked, his deep, low voice vibrating through the crystal on the table. It was not an answer, but a deliberate redirection wrapped in his signature, questioning cadence.

Opposite the senator stood Marietta Vale, Callan’s newly minted lover. She was a vision of sculpted satin, her evening gown catching the golden light like a dark, spilled wine. Diamond earrings flashed at her neck, competing with the heavy, ornate bracelet on her wrist. She had stepped seamlessly into the void left by Callan's wife, Lara, who had supposedly abandoned the family six months prior.

"It will be a beautiful partnership for all of us," Marietta said, her voice smooth and melodic, offering the senator a polished, carefully reassuring public smile. "Callan has worked tirelessly to ensure peace in the city. We are merely reaping the rewards of his vision."

"He is a visionary, indeed," the senator chuckled, raising his glass higher. "And you, my dear, are the perfect hostess. You have breathed life back into this beautiful home."

"Thank you, Senator," Marietta purred, resting a manicured hand lightly on Callan's broad shoulder. "I only wish to see him happy."

Callan did not lean into her touch. He stared blankly at the white roses in the center of the table. "Do you truly believe peace is something that can be bought, Senator?"

The senator blinked, slightly unnerved by the coldness in the mafia boss's eyes. "Well, I suppose it requires a firm hand, does it not?"

In the periphery of the room, standing completely still in the shadows of the heavy silk curtains, was Nadine Ellis. The housemaid was beautiful like a classic movie star, her softly heart-shaped face and delicate cheekbones framed by dark hair arranged in a loose, elegant bun. Her slender figure and graceful posture were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. Her neatly tied white apron, collar, and cuffs were immaculate against the dark fabric.

But beneath her polished exterior, Nadine was trembling. Her hand was buried deep in the pocket of her apron, her fingers wrapped tightly around a cold, mud-caked piece of gold.
